Pixar I believe usually starts out with a cold open. My nomination is the incredibles. The movie is already set mainly in a slick 60s setting. For the opening they go back about 10 or so years to an incredible noir styled set of scenes. It sets the mood perfectly and is actually pretty quick to draw you in.

Got to go with Up with WALL-E close behind. But I think WALL-E is the better movie since they continue it for much longer, like 40 minutes.

Toy story 3 was awesome. Been ages since I had seen either of the movies in ages.

Huge “the gang was fricking back” moment

I do think WALL-E’s cheerful post apocalyptic opening is up for consideration, and it goes on for much longer than Up did. Up’s first 10 minutes are cinematic perfection and heartbreaking, but there is something to say about WALL-E’s entire first act.

I think it has to be Up....

And it got me thinking in a rewatch a few months ago...

How heavy that is and that it definitely was over the heads of a lot of kids that would see it... I’m not sure if they would get that she miscarried and the pain behind it

I think they’d get that they couldn’t have kids. At least 6 and up I think would understand this.

I watched The opening of Wall-E on a Spanish movie channel without knowing it for about 40 minutes.

That’s how good of a movie WALL-E is that in a foreign language I think you can understand just about everything the characters are doing and saying even if it’s in a foreign language. The only joke or line you wouldn’t get if you didn’t speak the language is about pizza plants. Just the Captain’s and the other human’s demeanor you’d understand everything they're saying. Even this line that embodies the film just looking at the acting and delivery you’d know what they were saying.

“On the Axiom we will survive.”
“I don’t want to survive! I want to live!”

Came here to post this.

The whole "married life" sequence basically tells Carl and Ellie's life story via music and without saying a word. It shows their happiness and devotion to each other, their tragedy with of being unable to have children, their dream of going to Paradise Falls and how life kept getting in the way, Ellie's passing, and ultimately Carl's regret of thinking he had never given Ellie the adventure he thought she wanted.

If you can make it through that montage without shedding a tear, you're a damn robot.

The entire first third of Wall-E is legitimate Oscar worthy filmmaking.

That 9 minutes from Up, though, is Pixar's finest moment.

Until they get to the Axiom Wall-e feels like one long opening. The music is incredible as well. I wish Disney had more Wall-e stuff around my oldest loved it. I was having to buy Chinese knock off toys.

Inside out is worthy of an honorable mention.

Up wins if you are considering the “married life” montage as an opening - it’s technically not the opening scene. It takes a minute to get to the montage.

Finding Nemo has a pretty killer opening.
