Are they worth the money?

I got a really good deal through Amazon, purchasing La Haine on criterion collection. Am I going to be blown away?

Thoughts?

They are all great transfers and make available many films that would never be released in such quality otherwise. The extras are also better than anything else out there. I think they're worth it, but I never pay full price. They have a great sale on them once or twice a year through the Criterion website and also Barnes and Noble. You can find them on Amazon on sale often too.

i mean, just because Criterion puts out something, it doesnt mean you should automatically like it. Armageddon has a criterion, and that movie blows.

but their product is top notch.

Criterion is great for old or obscure movies that have detiorated.

It's not worth the price for modern movies...like they have Breakfast Club, unless you just are paying for extras like trivia facts.

I've always seen Criterion as valuable in restoring old prints which they do a good job at most prominently black and white prints.

Criterion started out being about restoration and allowing us to rediscover obscure films, not mainstream fare with extra special features.

But if you love a modern movie and want the extras that's great but sometimes there's not all much more.

I own Rushmore Criterion collection but it's not really worth the extra cost.

But movies like M are a good example. First time I saw it the picture was awful.

Some old films were so damaged and neglected. Criterion isn't perfect (they can only work with what they got) but they are better versions for old movies you love.

For a movie you love it's definitely worth it. For Brazil for instance you can listen to Terry Gilliam's commentary for the entire movie if you want. It has a lot on the backstory including Gilliam's fight to get the studio to release it. And it has the hideous "Love Conquers All" version that the studio wanted.
