Some I can think of off the top of my head:

- Picard was tortured by the Cardassians for quite a while.

- Picard was assimilated by the Borg and used to kill a lot of Federation crew members (and probably civilians too)

- Tasha Yar was taken by the Romulans and pretty much had to lead a Romulan life for years (I think)

- Spock literally died in one of the movies.

- Seven of Nine was a Borg drone, though I think it was before she was a member of a Federation starship.

- Picard lived an entire lifetime as a farmer or something like that, but I don't think it was really unpleasant.

- Seven of Nine was turned into a gladiator (and I think this happened to other people on other ST shows as well).

- I'm sure there are many I've missed.

Picard has also been emasculated to the point of being a meek, subservient bitch. So. Picard.

Worf had it pretty rough with the Jem'Hadar in this kind of story.

They brought Spock back in spectacular fashion, though.

They killed Data (by far the best character in the universe since The Original Series, and killed him for no good reason, either) and never felt it necessary to bring him back.

Picard/Stewart probably had the worst overall experience as a Starfleet officer - the torture, assimilation, having to carry the lion's share of the legitimate acting load (along with Data/Spiner) for 7 years and 4 films (3 of them pretty bad).

Was it in TNG or DS9? I think I might have missed this storyline.

WORF!!!

Lieutenant Commander and Security Chief, got his arse kicked in every single hand-to-hand one-on-one combat he was involved in.

Even by the little old lady that was traveling with the pretty princess to her new homeland she would rule.

He was a horrible example of a Klingon.

Yet another example of the overall and man-for-man superiority of DS9 over TNG. DS9 Worf >>>>> TNG Worf and, arguably, TNG Worf was TNG's third best character (after Data and Picard).

Picard and Sisko are about a push.

Data is better than any character on DS9 except Garak

After that, the DS9 characters are dominant over TNG. It's glaring when you compare them side-by-side.

Even Jake is better than Wesley (easily the respective series' worst characters).

Commander Sonak's transporter accident. "What we got back didn't live long... fortunately." Gave me the creeps as a kid.

Honorable mention for Thomas Riker. What a mindfrick. Lost for years, only to later find out no one knew because your "clone" took over your life.

Chief O’Brien was once wrongly convicted and had 20 years’ worth of memories in a prison cell (where he wound up killing his cell mate) implanted in his mind.

Here's a few that haven't been mentioned:

-When Chef O'Brien was sentenced by having a neural device implanted where he had the memory of being imprisoned in solitary for 20 years with an imaginary cellmate that he was friends with but near the end of his imprisonment accidentally killed him in a skirmish over food only to find out his friend was saving it for both of him. O'brien was mess when he returned and nearly took his own life over the agony of that memory only to be talked out of it by Dr. Bashir.

-The "The Year in Hell" story when Voyager was being chased by "Annorax" and his time ship. Jane, 7 and Tuvok had the worst of that year...

-Deanna's "Mind Rape"..

-Sisko's obsession with the betrayal of Michael Eddington joining the Maquis. Sisko when as far has using a bio-weapon on a planet the force him to surrender.

-When Sisko and Dukat were stranded on a planet after a shuttle crash. Dukat's insanity peaked and he beat the shite out of Sisko

-When Odo and Quark were marooned on a freezing planet during the time when Odo was a human. He broke his leg and Quark had to climb up a mountain to get a transmitter signal to a spot to be heard. He both nearly diesd.

-Jake Sisko facing the fact that he's a coward when he and Bashir respond to a medical emergency at a field hospital on a planet where the Federation was fighting the Klingon's. Jake, an aspiring writer, thought this was going to be exciting but quickly got a reality check at see "war" face to face and ran in terror putting Bashir's life in danger only to be saved and had to deal with that guilt of running.

God bless her heart. This is yet more ammunition - she was comparable to the acting by folks other than Stewart and Spiner in TNG, and she was hopelessly outclassed by the actors of DS9.

I mean, Voyager makes it all the more clear - Neelix was "okay" and, generally held his own with the Doctor (who was clearly the class of that cast), but the balance of the Voyager cast was about the level of Frakes/Sirtis/McFadden - reasonably attractive folks who learned their lines and hit their marks. Not a particularly memorable acting performance among them (other than Picardo, of course).

The Doctor, frankly, is the only reason to watch Voyager (other than horny teenagers and Seven of Nine). To give them credit, if you get through it, has a very nice series ending.

Did anyone ever have to make out with Whoopie Goldberg?

Because that would be it.

Christopher Pike.

All of that incredible technology and for years he had to ride around like this:

I mean... damn. Stephen Hawking's chair was more technologically advanced, all Pike could do was beep once or twice for yes/no.

Pretty much anyone in the entire Voyager crew. They were thrown into another part of the galaxy that they knew nothing about. Had to fight off Kazon, Vidiians, the Year of Hell, the Borg (numerous times), new space oddities, the Swarm, Species 8472, aliens they couldn't see, their own Starfleet allies, Hirogen, etc. They can make a great argument for having the single worst experience or ordeal.
