Dang. Almost the worst character in the whole thing.

Hopkins...lead role

Not really. He was only on screen for about a fifth of the film. There are really no definitions for lead vs supporting and the studios nominate actors in the category they think they can win. In Ordinary People, the whole focus of the film really was Timothy Hutton's character, and they nominated him for supporting actor, which he won. It might not align with the ego, but Hopkins was really supporting.

I don't think Goodfellas would have been nearly the same film if it were not for Joe Pesci.

And the original Karate Kid wouldn't have been the same without Ralph Macchio... I mean, without him, it is a really good story about a World War II hero recovering from loss, but Ralph definitely puts the movie over the top.

I don't know how supporting character gets designated but Inglorious Bastards would be very different without Christoph Waltz/Hans Landa. This in one movie where I don't know who the lead should be. Maybe Melanie Laurent/Shosanna?

Also Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained.

Morgan Freeman in a bunch of roles.

In Unforgiven his role was not glamorous but IMO he went a long way towards humanizing Eastwood's character.

If his role in Shawshank if considered supporting, that film would have definitely been less without him. (admittedly he was nominated for a Golden Globe as best actor, though).

I've never seen Million Dollar Baby, but he won or was nominated for a ton of awards as a supporting character in that. Same for Street Smart. And on TV he's been nominated for an Emmy as outstanding guest actor in The Komisky Method.

Yes, but who was considered the main actor. Seems like all of them were supporting.

That's a damn good question...

I've never gotten the love for Lambs precisely because of Hopkins. When I watched it I never once believed he was some kind of criminal mastermind or lethal threat. He was so hammy and comical he was about as threatening as my beagle pup. I couldn't stop laughing or eye-rolling at that movie. Then was absolutely flabbergasted it became some legendary cinema.

Samuel L. Jackson was criminally underrated in that film, though... should've been nominated as well

Was Robin Williams considered a supporting character in Good Will Hunting?

He won an Oscar for Best Supporting role for it, so I'd say yes

A lot of people are naming roles that I would consider co-leading.

A common example of this is the buddy movie - Lethal Weapon, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, etc.

Then you also have ensembles where there isn't a primary lead actor.
