I agree.

But, you can also add Bill Murray. His role was not suppose to be that big. He ad libbed many of his lines.

Yes, but who was considered the main actor. Seems like all of them were supporting.

Was Robin Williams considered a supporting character in Good Will Hunting?

The play between Cruise and Gooding in this movie only worked because of the Gooding played his role IMO

Hopkins and Bates were lead roles.

Hopkins had less than 20 minutes of screen time. He was neither the protagonist or antagonist. Very clearly was a supporting role, his performance was just that good.

He was good, but I wouldn't say he carried the film. It would be just as entertaining without him.

On one of the many documentaries, they discuss the fact that the final cut was MUCH different from what they originally envisioned. It was suppose to be more of a love story and Danny Noonan was the main (MAIN) character. Bill Murray was only suppose to be there for a day or two.

At different points, all the script said was something like "Bill speaks". Murray took that and ran with it. The whole Dalai Lama, Cinderella Boy, and Mrs. Crane scenes were entirely improvised.

Rodney, on the other hand, required that everything be completely written out in the script.

The final cut was even a different movie than what they thought when they finished filming. During editing, they realized what worked and Chase, Dangerfield, and Murray became bigger parts of the movie.
