I have not started this but eagerly await the answer.

I loved Moss in Mad Men.

Always wanted to watch this but never got around to it.

"It's not the show we want, but the show we need in these times."

Or some horsheit tagline like that...

It's yet another example of critics and media pumping up a show/film that is, in reality, solid, but in no way deserves the accolades it brings just because it has very anti-whatever undertones.

This is a trend that has frankly become a rinse-repeat thing. 10 yrs ago movies, and especially TV, were mostly praised because they were great, and time has shown that the applause was essentially justified. Take Sopranos, Lost, Mad Men, The Wire, Breaking Bad, etc.

Even when some of those weren't commercial hits, they deservedly commanded respect and Fandom from both critics and audiences alike. Now, the reviews are only based on how many boxes a certain show checks for the reviewers worldview instead of just enjoying a finely crafted work.

It is the dystopian future that the left thinks will happen, if the GOP wins. Or if Christianity keeps existing.

That is my takeaway from hearing people at work talk about it.

It was a good book. Haven't seen the show and have no particular interest in seeing it, but Atwood is a talented prose writer. Regarding a post or two here, social commentary, despite many kneejerk reactions to the contrary,is not inherently bad. It's like any other motivation for writing -- it can be done well or it can be done clumsily. You can agree with it or you can disagree. Agreeing doesn't make it necessarily good, and disagreeing doesn't make it necessarily bad. Too many people get caught up in taking these things personally that they're incapable of giving a fair review of works that please them or piss them off.

In all fairness, the “handmaids” in this are basically the Bible’s version of how women should be and the GOP has a tendency to push “Christian values”. Do I believe it could ever come to this in the United States? Doubtful. The US has far too many people in it to keep any group subjugated to that extent for any long period of time. At least half of the country would never go for anything like that and it would be an all out civil war that would leave the US a desolate wasteland with not enough people left over to sustain any resemblance of the society we have now. Think about how many were killed in the Civil War. Now multiply that times several thousand because weaponry has become far more deadly now.

Besides, Christianity is dying.

In the Old Testament.

Jesus was cool with strong wimmenz, bruh.

So what you really mean, is that this is the ortho Jewish woman.

With some pretty strong women at the forefront. Not sex slaves. The only groups that seem to be cool with chick sex slaves are 1) Muslims 2) Secular sex cults like NXIVM 3)Democrat supported MS-13

You are completely insane if you think more than .01% of the US would be OK with that shite.

In the US, sure. I mean the Bible predicted there would be a "great falling away" before the epic harvest or whatever.

It is a very good show. Creates a scary world that you can see possibly happening ( or something similar) which is what a lot of good science fiction does. Great acting, casting, lots of drama. It is pretty joyless which gets old but overall very good.

I am always amazed at how people are unable to separate fiction from their politics...who cares what the political slant of a show is, just enjoy it for the entertainment value. I’m a pretty conservative person and I still think West Wing was some of the best TV made.

I've enjoyed it. I think the 1st season was a lot better than season 2 - for reasons that are probably spoilers - but it's a well-done dystopian show. Not sure how you could not think it isn't well done; the dialogue, imagery, overall plot are all very good.

I haven't watched S2 yet.

Lol, no it's not. The bible's ideal version of women are not adulteresses, which require the husband to literally cheat on his actual wife in front of her, actually with her laying on top of the adulteress in order to procreate.

It's more of a a coup in the US, with extremest types leading it, and women becoming nothing more than slaves.
