What happens to movies when an actor dies?

Say Paul Walker was in the middle of filming a movie, what would they do with that movie. I use Paul Walker as an example for obvious reasons but really this can apply to any actor?

Do they just stop filming the movie? Kill him off in the movie? Redo it? Anyone?

Have you seen the movie Ed Wood? They dealt with this issue in a unique way.

I have not seen that movie. How do they deal with it?

Some actors are replaced

Some are doubled -- John Candy died while making a film. He was doubled in long shots while the script was rewritten to give his lines in unfilmed scenes to other actors

Sometimes the script is hurriedly rewritten to minimize the actor's role

Its about the director Ed Wood who was notorious for being one of the worst directors ever. Bela Lugosi died halfway through filming a movie and they brought in someone else and had him hold a cape over his face the whole time. That's a pretty silly example but I think The Crow did actually use a double after Brandon Lee died but that was only for one or two scenes and he was in shadows the whole time.

It really just depends on how far along they are in filming. Chris Farley had recorded around 85% of his lines for Shrek when he died and once they recast him with Mike Myers the animators had to redo the mouth movements for the entire movie. This ended costing a few million dollars extra and pushed the release date but it all worked out in the end.

Pretty sure he was in the middle of F&F 7 when he died. In The Crow they just used another actor that looked similar to Brandon Lee to finish the scenes that weren't filmed yet. But it was easier in that film since he had face paint. Probably either have him killed in the movie or reshoot his scenes would be my guess.

F&F is kind of screwed because the only way you can really kill him in the movie that would make sense...would be by him dying how he died IRL. And theyll come out looking like assholes if they do that

Just reshoot his scenes with Vanderbeek instead.

Not really.

Heath Ledger was filming Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he died. They rewrote it and Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all filled in as different aspects of his character.

was just reading about that

quote:

Heath Ledger was filming "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" in 2008 when he died of accidental drug intoxication. The film was completed using other actors as fantasy versions of Ledger's character.

check out this one 19 years!

quote:

River Phoenix was almost finished filming "Dark Blood" when he went in 1993. It would take 19 years for the film to be completed.

Man, his death leaves a lot of people out of work. Think of how many people work on a movie, and this was a franchise with no end in sight.

Heath Leger was in the middle of filming a movie after The Dark Knight when he died. Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell volunteered to fill in for him for the rest of production.

What's interesting about Farley and Shrek is that none of his recordings have been released to the public.

They will probably rewrite the movie, minus Walker and just say that he moved and he's racing somewhere else or something. Seriously doubt that they will kill him off. F&F aren't exactly movies that you go see for the actors, so he'll be easily replaced. They'll probably bring in some young kid to be Vin Diesel's protege or something like that. I hate to sound so callous, but it's true.

I can confirm. This is the girl who filled in for JGL after he hanged himself while shooting Premium Rush.

"Game of Death" with Bruce Lee is the worst example of what can be done to a film when that happens.

Using a cardboard cut out..wtf.
