What happened to Matthew Modine?

I'm currently watching Vision Quest and this crossed my mind. He starred in a few movies in the late 80's and then it seems he fell off. How come he didn't turn into a bigger star?

He was just in Stranger Things. He's been working pretty steadily, just not a star.

He's been around saw him in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, he played the SecDef. He's done a lot of TV in the last few years, so I don't think he's hurting.

The Vision Quest soundtrack is also an awesome CD.
This is one of my Guilty Pleasure movies. If I'm flipping the channels and it's on, I'm watching it.

Vision Quest was a great movie. Had a nice turn in Gross Anatomy, as well.
Was a lead actor until a string of flops in the '90s pushed him into supporting actor territory.

It is awesome but if you go back and watch the movie, they play "lunatic fringe" like 4 times.
It would be like if "You're the best around" was in every Karate Kid training montage.
