Last night I finished the 275th episode and man what a show! I’ve never watched it from start to finish. Here’s my notes.

-The first few seasons with Coach and Dianne were great. I don’t care that this board hates the dynamic between Sam and Dianne. I think those seasons make you appreciate the later seasons. We got to watch Sam (and Frasier) overcome tough times and grow.

-Sam is the man. For a a pretty simple character at the beginning, I think the writers did a great job of growing the character and giving him a nice arc. Even though the finale didn’t really end anyone’s time at Cheers, you can see that everyone, including Sam, is wiser with age.

-Woody was cast perfectly and nailed the farm boy in the big city role. I also think it’s awesome he married a smoke show who happens to be rich AND got elected to City Council.

-Frasier is the best character on the show imo. Smart, witty, funny and a little crazy. I don’t think the show would be the same without him.

-The seasons with Rebbeca never dropped off in quality. Although I think she became cartoonish towards the end...

-Norm and Cliff are the perfect bar stool statues. They remind you that normal losers and real life people are in the bar and keep the episodes well rounded. I also love the fact that we never actually SEE Norm’s wife Veera

Overall, I think Cheers is an all time great. 11 seasons and a ton of awards. I think it’s #1 in my book as far as sitcoms go. And I’ve watched all the greats.

Side note- Just realized “Frasier” ran for 11 seasons as well. What a successful spin off. Grammar played the Frasier character for 20 years! Crazy.

I also re watched this episode of Frasier below and MAN did Norm and Cliff look rough after ten years
quote:

In the ninth-season episode of Frasier, "Cheerful Goodbyes" in 2002, Frasier returns to Boston to give a speech and Niles, Daphne, and Martin come along to see the city. Frasier runs into Cliff Clavin (played by John Ratzenberger) at the airport and learns that Cliff is retiring and moving to Florida. Frasier and company attend Cliff's retirement party, where Frasier reunites with the rest of the gang from Cheers (minus Sam, Woody, and Rebecca), including bar regular Norm Peterson, waitress Carla Tortelli, barflies Paul Krapence (played by Paul Willson) and Phil (played by Philip Perlman)

Yeah it sucked watching the last episode because you knew the show was ending. BUT, the way they did it leaves you smiling because you know they’ll all be back in there the next day you know?

In the pilot, the bar patrons are discussing the sweatiest movie. Cliff, whose first lines ever, says 'Body Heat'. Camera cuts to Sam Malone played by Ted Danson who is in the movie Body Heat. Body Heat came out the previous year.

i'm probably in the minority but, i never got the Rebecca love. I never really thought she was that attractive.

Also, I never thought they could find a replacement for coach. but, woody was a great choice !

Cliff is the best character, imo

I love Cliff but I disagree. Cliff was perfect for cheap laughs and a nice support character but Frasier helped drive the show. We also saw more side stories written around Frasier. From Dianne to Lilith and his son, he’s a main character of the show.

I had a hatred for Diane (mostly because she reminded me of an old girlfriend) but loved the dynamic. The show was famous for replacing players without missing a beat, but they never recovered that one amazing dynamic.

She was selfish in her own way but wasn’t horrible...

She was trying to change Sam and I think that’s why she gets so much resentment.

Agree to disagree.

Also, just started the rewatch of Cheers, for the first time. On season 1, but already fearing the lump in my throat at the end. Loved the show when it aired originally, and I've seen some reruns, but I haven't watched it straight thru.

It’s a time consuming process but the show is so good, you lose track of time watching it

Great follow-up to that scene, when Diane introduces Frasier to the bar. She's trying to belittle the bar patrons by telling Frasier that they pass the time with mindless arguments like, "Sweatiest Movie", and Frasier answers in a confident tone, "Cool Hand Luke!" (IIRC) The barflies give their approval, Diane rolls her eyes, etc.

About 5 months... I watched two or three episodes a night, maybe 3 or 4 nights a week.

You definitely have to pace yourself

Still the greatest sitcom ever made. It's amazing they could lose a character as great as Coach and not miss a beat, getting Woody to take over the role as bartender.

(Coach will always be the center of my favorite episode, the one where his daughter is dating a total lout because she thinks she can't do any better because she's unattractive. and the dialogue with her father as she tried to tell him this and that her mother was also "no looker" while Coach can only see everything he loved in his wife in his daughter... it breaks my heart every time)

Yeah that was a great one. Coach was solid.
