what age do you guys generally find to be appropriate for watching some of the 80s / early 90s classics with your kids? my older daughter is nine, and I've been thinking about watching the Indiana Jones movies with her soon, but it's hard for me to look objectively at the age-appropriateness of some of these classics because i'm so nostalgic about them. my own parents were pretty strict with watching movies, and i find myself also erring on the side of being strict myself (probably a little too much so).

i know this is a broad topic and i'm sure answers will be all over the place. but whatever

Only you will know if your daughter can handle it. Some kids are more mature than others. If you're confident that she can watch it and not repeat the bad language around town without care than go ahead and let he watch it.

i would check out the parental guides on IMDB. Not sure exactly when the ratings changed but, "PG" was a lot different than it is now.

Sex & Nudity
Mild 140 of 227 found this mild
Some light innuendo in one scene only.
In a short scene the main female character wears a night gown that shows the nipple impressions of her breasts. No nudity.

Violence & Gore
Severe 119 of 236 found this severe
43 deaths in total.

I would love to have streaming service that shows the tv edited versions of movies.

Someone actually took the time to register/log into IMDb and type that in.

The Rocky films do not contain any vulgarity or anything inappropriate. I didn't realize this until I rewatched them all (through 4) with my kids. Apparently Stallone was intentional about this when he wrote them.

quasi-related, you just never know where the random "adult situations" question will come from. i gave my daughter a stack of my old Calvin and Hobbes books about a year ago and she is obsessed with them. but last night she brought this one to me and asked me to explain the joke:

One hilarious thing I've noticed about the classics upon rewatch is all the cursing and such in certain movies like Blues Brothers. I always watched those type movies on TNT or TBS so they were scrubbed. Catching them lately on the streaming services or on Blu-Ray I was like, good lord.

Something to keep in mind as you hoe this row.

PG movies back then were the equivalent to PG13/R movies today. Back when America was ALPHA. Since we are now a big fat beta vagina of a country, some of the 80s movies will offend this new breed of young kids these days

Movie history lesson of the day

Red Dawn was the very first PG-13 rated Movie

Released August 10, 1984

We lived out in the country in the 80's and had a Satellite dish. I bet I watched Red dawn 100 times.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is the reason we have PG-13. First movie to get a PG-13 rating was Flamingo Kid, but the first release of a PG-13 movie was Red Dawn.

Do what you feel comfortable with.

Hopefully you and your spouse are on the same page. My wife is a total prude when it comes to content exposure. I saw Terminator 2 in the theater when I was 9.

I would suggest NOT using Common Sense Media.

If you are cool with her seeing the ending where dude's faces are melting all over the place.

We watched the Indiana Jones movies with the kids during COVID.

You’ll want to skip a couple of scenes from ToD. Pretty intense. Nothing super inappropriate tho. Ultimately other people can’t make this call for you. You’ll need to prescreen yourself and/or have the remote handy.

The opening of the Ark at the end of Raiders is a thousand times more intense than anything Temple of Doom, IMO.
