I hate the parts that remind me of the real housewives but I like the lord of the rings esque bent to it. Should I sign up? Is this as good as it’s going to get?

If thats how you describe it, then you should probably go back to your Law and Order marathons.

I felt the same way.

I watched season 1 and was nonplussed. I walked away for a couple years and never gave it a thought because I had little interest.

Then I started up again. I resumed with season 2. The story and characters are deep and numerous. It takes time to mine the material. I found the series grew in strength with the seasons.

If you don't then you're in a very minority of people who watched but didn't like the series. I found it very entertaining, well written, for the most part it's not predictable, has lots of violence, lots of sex, hot naked women, and a lot of compelling characters.

So

Continue watching, it gets better and better. You will probably want to re watch it after you finish.

If you didn’t like it after season 1 I’m not sure you will ever get into it. I watched season 1 (had never heard of the series before) and was so enthralled I immediately went and got the books because I couldnt wait that long to see what happens. Then of course the show passed up the books and although I’ll know how the tv show ends but will probably never get to read the conclusion of the books.

I agree. Never heard of the books but decided to give the show a chance when it aired in 2011. I was hooked after the opening scene with the white walkers, and definitely hooked when Jaime pushed Bran out of the window.
If that didn't hook you or the death of Ned Stark, or the birth of the dragons, Im not sure the show is for you.

I like Sean bean he was one of the reasons I decided to try it in the first place. I want to know more about what’s over that wall and wth is up with the dragon lady, but I hate the slept with my sister and made a whiney bitch of a tyrant who offed my favorite character parts. So I’m kinda 60-40 wondering if it’s worth my time.

I take the negative comments to mean they can’t see why anyone wouldn’t like the greatest show on earth ever. Am I reading that right?

Watch this

It’ll explain everything that happened from ancient times all the way up to season 1
It’ll make the show make so much more sense

I think the reason that people are saying your take sucks is that you dismissed the politics and intrigue aspect of the show with a Real Housewives comparison.

Dragons and swords and zombies are cool and all, but the real heart of the show IS the politics and intrigue. It's what elevates Game of Thrones beyond high fantasy and makes it unique and appealing to people who don't normally like fantasy. So to wave that aspect of the show away with a comparison to some low brow reality crap rubs people the wrong way.

Oh I see. Thanks this is what I was after. I don’t think I’m going to like it then. All the bickering plotting scheming backstabbing murdering intrigue drama reminds me of those shows on bravo is all. No derogatory intent, I just don’t care to watch it. It annoys me more than intrigues me despite liking the other parts. I’m often in the minority with my opinions on things though.

Agreed. It definitely gets better, but the first season is enough to gauge if you will like it as a whole.

If you only like the battles/dragons/etc. you'd actually like the last 2 seasons the best. The biggest critique they receive is too much action without proper/realistic development. But as said above, the part you don't like is what makes most of us love the show. Makes the small moments significant, and the big moments even more meaningful.
