Ah, a time when people didn't cry over comedy.

I miss those days

The thing about Blazing Saddles is it’s actually making fun of the white people in the town for the most part. The sheriff is essentially Bugs Bunny.

Well yes, but after seeing the shite with Disney+ on some of their older movies I almost expected the TV version of Blazing Saddles

Yeah I get what you’re saying. My point is that from a rational perspective, it really shouldn’t be considered a racist movie as some people believe.

It is only because of that one word despite the context though

People who assume it is racist are wrong.

As pointed out, the entire point of the movie was to make fun of such people. Depicting small town people as racist does not mean the movie itself is racist. They also have a change of heart as the movie goes on. Which is actually a great story/message.

I also think the movie had two black writers on board. One being Richard Pryor of course.

I remember the interview with Mel Brooks when he talked about getting Pryor and asking him to do a lot, if not, all the dialog for the sheriff so that it would be authentic.

Racist.

Jk. Love this one, it’s a timeless classic that I’ll catch occasionally & laugh hysterically ever time. It’s sad something like this could never be made today because people are unable to laugh at themselves and always looking to be offended.

This is a great way to put it. The whole thing is satire in its purest form and never takes itself seriously. Why should the audience?

Mel Brooks has credited Richard Pryor as one of the main reasons it was such a success. His response to Mel’s apprehension about the N usage was on point!

quote:

So I called up a friend of mine, this guy who was a brilliant writer and the best stand-up comic of all time: Richard Pryor. I said, “Richard, read this, tell me what you think.” He read it and said, “Yeah, this is good … this is real. I like this.” I asked, “Right, but what about the N word? We can’t say this so many times …” “Well, Mel, you can’t say it. But the bad guys can say it. They would say it!” Then I asked him to come write it with us, and he said sure. That was how it started.

Hot tip:

The B and N are really close on the keyboard if you ever happen to use the word "bigger" in a sentence talking about a black guy.

That typo would be hard to explain.

Wait, are there actually people who think that it's racist?

I thought that there were just the usual midwit people that condemn it because it uses the "N" word, without actually doing any sort of thinking about it. Kind of like with Huckleberry Finn.

Might have been the same interview, what I recall from it was that Mel wanted Richard to play the sheriff...and the studio said no way, with Richard being somewhat, well, controversial . So Richard told Mel that he knew a guy that was blacker than he was (Cleavon Little). Mel said he was all in...I'm sorta paraphrasing, but I think his reaction was "The studio will shite! He's our guy!"

That sounds right :) Regardless, it sounds EXACTLY like something Mel would do.
