A Jeopardy! clue the other day said that it was.

I did not remember it being controversial. I remember lots of people going to the theater.

Anyone remember? Care to share.

Hugely controversial. You can dissect it how you want most likely based on your political or religious views, but there was a big outcry against the movie. The allegations were that Mel Gibson's interpretation placed heavy blame on Jews and had the potential to cause tension between Christians and Jews.

Not to mention that many people were upset with the graphic gore. Some reviewed it as a torture-porn film.

I think there was some controversy just over how brutal it was and how explicitly it was depicted.

There was definitely some controversy over the brutality in the movie. Lots of churches bussed people over to the theaters here to see it and I reminder some people being really upset over what their kids saw.

Well, who else’s fault is it? The Romans only got involved because the Jews wanted them to crucify Our Lord.

Some Jewish groups said it had anti sementic undertones.
I remember seeing that.

It was the fault of people who lived 2000 years ago and had very little to do with people of ethnically Jewish background who live today. I see someone has tendencies for the generalizing reasoning of a racist.

Yes, it was the fault of Jews 2000 years ago. The film is accurate. I don’t blame modern Jews for the actions of their ancestors.

I remember a lot of people were upset over the violence in the movie but it was a movie whose whole plot was someone being executed by being beaten and then nailed to a cross. Not sure what they were expecting.

Hugely controversial.

Hollywood tried to blacklist it.

Libs and Jews called it anti-semetic.

Attacked Mel Gibson left and right in the media.

I went to Furman University and the were going to show it on campus. The Southern Baptists on the board freaked out and stopped the showing. A group of well connected alumni then got together and kicked the South Baptists off the board and ended the relationship. It was hugely controversial film.

Oops mixed this up w/ Last Temptation.

Hollywood is full of Jews so yeah some people had a problem with it. I don’t think Mel Gibson himself had been blacklisted yet though. Hollywood would have a collective stroke if he tried to make that movie now.
