Was Kevin dropping the chili the moment The Office jumped the shark?

Not to say that The Office didn’t have any quality writing after this episode, but this act, to me, just signified the first time the writing got shallow/cheap/desperate. I know it’s a beloved and iconic moment in the the show, but it seemed to depart from the prior subtle style of jokes that originally resonated with its audience.

Which makes no sense to me. Early office was witty and sharp and the delivery of the characters was superb. To go from that to "fat dullard spills chili, then rolls around in it" just felt cheap

It was just a cold open. So for me, my answer is no.

Michael driving the car into the lake was much worse than the chili spill

Not at all. It was fitting for that character. His narration saying he toasts his own chiles, dices fresh tomatoes, presses the garlic, etc., as he's dropping the chili was perfect. Then he says it's the thing he does best as he's putting it back into the pot with file folders.

Why do you think it's cheap?

Because I don’t find it intelligent. Kevin drops the chili and then writhes around in it. I don’t think it fits his character; I think it’s an example of Flanderization of his original character. To me it was an example of the writing team running low on nuanced takes on office life.

Subtle is not the way I would describe the office, especially early on the “that’s what she said” ones for example are quite the opposite

No he doesn't.

He drops the chili, then tries to scoop it back into the pot using Pam's file folders. At the very last minute, he slips. He's not "writhing around in it."

They did eventually start to move away from "office" scenarios and focus on the lives of the characters more with the office simply being the backdrop. Which is why I think the Christmas episodes are all very strong. None of them have any real storyline because it's simply one office christmas cliche after another.

When Erin came on board is when the show really started to go down hill. Steve Carrel leaving just drove in the nail.

Blasphemy. Erin is a great character, and weirdly hot.

It wasn't funny because he dropped the chili, it was funny because "it's the thing he does best," and no matter what Kevin kind of fumbles everything. Even the thing he does best.

It was on point for the character and the show, because you were hoping he would show everyone what he does best. They missed him nailing basketball shots, it was a callback to the good things he does that no one sees.

nothing really after season 2 fits his character if we are being honest. his character completely changed from his early depiction.

Probably so, but it definitely is not when the show jumped the shark. He drove his car into the lake a few episodes into Season 4 when The Office was still in it's prime.

I'm not sure if I can point to a single shark jumping moment for the show. Seasons 2-4 were definitely the best to me. Season 5 was still very good, but not quite the same.

I think Season 6 around the time Sabre bought Dundler Mifflin/Jim and Pam have the baby was the point when my interest in the show took a big step back. Then after Michael leaves, I honestly did not enjoy the show very much anymore.
