Was Henry Cavill A "Good" Superman?

To be honest, I never fully bought into him as the Man of Steel..I think the way they introduced his incarnation with the dark and more "serious" approach probably didn't help me embracing Henry Cavill's interpretation.
I am old enough to have watch Christopher Reeve's Superman as a kid and IMO will always be the gold standard. It wasn't just Reeve but how Superman was portrayed..."Truth, Justice, the American Way"...sentiments that seem outdated in society but are also values desperately need to be portrayed in movies to our youth.
To be honest, I like Brandon Routh in "Superman Returns" better than Cavill. He was basically imitation Christopher Reeve. The story was also pretty-much written in the same manner as the first 2 Superman movies......On a Side note, I do not like Amy Adams as Lois Lane. I have never bought into her and never will. I really liked Kate Bosworth as Lane. When she dyed her hair brown for the role she looked and acted the part really well.
I would be complete fine with re-invented Superman....Maybe if DC allowed Marvel to help out they could put a good product out there...LOL

Personally I don’t think they ever got Lois Lane right.
The redhead from the 50’s tv series was too stiff and the hair color was wrong (it’s supposed to be black) but was professional and mature.
Margot Kidder was fantastic as a character overhaul for the movie, but is not Lois Lane of the comic books, even though they got the hair color right. No way that flighty nut is a top shelf respected news reporter.
Kate Bosworth looked like a timid teenager with a big forehead and has brown thin hair.
Amy Adams is the closest to capturing the professional, nose-for-news, mature yet vunerable character, but is a redhead, which Lois is not.
Someone like Jennifer Connelly from the Hulk movie would have been a better Lois Lane, IMO.

He was pitch perfect.
Godlike quality needed for Superman.
Solid portrayal of Clark.
I liked him in MoS (and liked the movie-acknowledging its flaws).

I thought he did a good job.

Returns was a bad Superman movie because it was still being written to the limits of the old movies technology. And then cherry on topped it with a Clark as a deadbeat dad.
Cavill was saddled with Snyder who while decent to great at retreading other's work, absolutely sucks when off the lease.

The DCEU has literally done 2 things right, casting Cavill as Superman and Affleck as Batman, so yes he was a good Superman. They just had a director that didn't care for or understand the character and had shitty writers. Other than that Cavill was amazing as the man of steel.

He did about as good as you are gonna get for Superman right now.
Superman is such a boring character.

I liked MOS a lot. Thought t brought a new dimension way more interesting than the usual campy stuff we got.

Maybe it's not the actress but the character that's the problem.
The only time they ever got Lois Lane right was smallville and that is the big exception to the rule and only possible because Superman was not in the picture and she invented Superman for Clark.
Personally as a Superman fanboy, I really dislike the character of Lois Lane. Her whole shtick is a permanent damsel in distress for Superman that he can't even have sex without a blue kryptonite ring.
Lois Lane continually holds Superman back, is whiny as hell and openly shits on Clark Kent because she's always chasing after Superman and only got together with Clark because he debased himself by telling her the secret to get together with her.

I certainly wouldn't call him a bad one.

Sounds like you hate specific versions of Lois Lane and are combining them into one character.

The problem with Cavill's Superman was Zack Snyder. Superman shouldn't be dark and brooding and emo. Cavill was fine otherwise.

He was a good casting choice that got hampered by the numerous other flaws in the Superman movies he did. Write the character and movies differently and I think he'd be well regarded. As is, he gets dragged down by overall quality.
