Vanderpump rules-why the hype?
Posted by CunningLinguist on 5/24/23 at 8:59 pm1212
Can someone explain it to me like I am straight and never heard of this show until three weeks ago?
It is all I am seeing over my Twitter/IG feed about someone named Sandoval.

The first season or two or it was a relatively entertaining show about a restaurant staff at a popular restaurant in Los Angeles working, partying and living life trying to make it in their actual gig (acting, music, modeling). Anyone who ever worked in a restaurant could relate. They lived in shitty apartments and drove shitty cars.
By about the third season they had all become relatively wealthy lite celebrities but still had to keep working at the restaurant for the most part likely as part of the schtick, but otherwise were faux celebrities being obnoxious.
Like anything else, since they appeared on Bravo a certain portion of the population became addicted to hearing about them and here we are today.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the core cast of Vanderpump Rules was “barely netting $10,000 for their participation in the entire first season” but went through a round of contract negotiations in 2017 and 2018 to the tune of $25,000 per episode.

I got into it a couple of years ago with my ex and we'd both worked in restaurants so it was fun to watch. That and Southern Charm are just plain entertaining

Good summary. And now the drama is turned wayyy up to the point of being ridiculous. Or more ridiculous.

Long story short he’s on a reality show and just got caught cheating on his partner of 9 years with one of her best friends who is also on the show. Ariana is probably one of the more well regarded people on reality tv and has constantly gone to bat for Tom Sandoval (who is nowhere near as liked) so this is one of the rare instances in the genre where damn near everyone is going to take only one person’s side. She found about about him cheating when during a show for his band he dropped his phone and when she picked it up and right there in his texts was a video of her “friend” masterbating for Tom.

Was that actually what was supposedly on his phone? I've watched the show this season, and never caught that.
For the record, that girl Raquel is not very attractive.

Thanks for the explanation. I am not going to start watching this show but I do appreciate the insight. The show has reached a critical mass to where I feel i should at least be aware.

Desperate people trying to be famous for being famous.

Yes it’s annoying. I never even heard of this show until this alleged scandal.

Just finished Season 2. I gotta say this is some good reality trash viewing if you like that, and sometimes I do.
shite gets crazy but it doesn’t seem overly forced or fake as it seems in character of the people, ie, they ain’t acting they’re really that crazy.

Like all the Real Housewives and the Kardashian harem, they're famous for being famous.

My favorite Bravo show (besides Top Chef) is Summer House. A lot people like to start at season 3, but seasons 1 and 2 were most interesting to me because they were about real, genuine friends having a summer share house.
The first five seasons are the best, though.

Another cool thing about VPR, most of the younger people are various stages of young-poor. Before I watched, I thought it was about some silver spoon brats.

More viewing notes:
Lisa Vanderpump (the co-owner of the restaurant where everyone works (Sur) and the Housives star from which this spins off) huge Lib (go figure) and one episode per season is the lgbqjyed parade and quite gay - obviously. But that’s pretty limited to that episode.
Not much gay otherwise.
This show has a weird way of being attractive and fun.

Jax is the realist person on the show. He is a shite head, but he is what he is and doesn't hid it.
Ariana is fake as frick. Acts like this down home girl yea hides all her issues from everyone. Sandy is a shite head, but she treated him like shite.

Jax doesn’t get a universal pass nor any credit for being “real” just because he decided to start finally telling the truth on his shitty behavior. Oftentimes he’s only admitted shite after already being busted on it.
I’m only a few into S3 so maybe need to reserve final judgment but so far he’s the worst (although also funny and a good plot tool) as far as lying, cheating and screwing over people, especially for little or no reason.
He’s a shitty friend, boyfriend and employee.
Also I know much of this is likely scripted but I have fun just going with it.

Must be later on. So far she seems chill and trying to stay above the shite storms.
Funny (to myself at least) I never had any idea whatsoever what this show was about or cared all this time, 10 years later. The name made it seem stupid (also had no idea who or what Vanderpump was).
Happened to be channel flipping and put on an episode and thought it looked like good reality garbage to watch and its been surprisingly good, in that regard.
