Ehh, Jack wasn't that high up there. We knew everything about Jack we needed to know from his first centric episode. Knowing events from his past is different than knowing him. There was never an episode dedicated to completely dissecting him as a character and the very fiber of his being (aside from maybe Through the Looking Glass), since Jack has always been a pretty good guy, who is merely conflicted by his outward environment and is obsessed with helping others.
Some of the other characters are much more interesting and the very fiber of their character is dissected much more. In LOST Locke, Ben, Sawyer, and Desmond are much more analyzed than Jack really is.

Oh the Lost folks are so funny... haha.
Ben Linus as "thoroughly explored?" No.
Homer
George Constanza
Sam Malone
Then probably Walter White and a toss up.

Jack changed a great deal over the series. I do agree about the others you mentioned though. Sawyer and Locke particularly. I would rather know more about Ben in the later Hurley years.

I know you don't like the character, but every little detail of his character was explored, from his good, his evil, and his ugliness.

Dexter is a great one.
Walter White isn't IMO. I'm only halfway through season 4, but outside of knowing he was an overqualified high school science teacher who somehow got squeezed out of a huge company he helped start. And had some kind of relationship with that woman before Skylar.
We don't know much about pre cancer Walter

Only because we literally saw EXACTLY what was going on in his head....

Doubt that he cracks the top 5, but Thomas Magnum was pretty thoroughly explored, especially for that time period and that genre. The Ivan episode still sticks with me 25 years later.

Frasier, Cartman, Hank Hill, Sam Malone

Characters who serve as a narrator usually provide more insight into their makeup.

Al Bundy - long running center of a sitcom focused primarily on his life
I mean, anyone who was alive in the 90's knows how many touchdowns Al scored in a single game at Polk High.
There wasn't much else to discuss for Mr. Bundy.

Just because we checked off a bunch of boxes doesn't mean a character has been "thoroughly explored". Cartman is not a character study, he's a comedic device. Thorough exploration requires depth, not width.
By that standard, I think you can make a case for Lee Adama of BSG or Tobias Beecher of Oz. And of course, Walter White.

I don't get how y'all are saying Walter White?
We know he was a pussy pre cancer, and turned into a bad arse, besides that...
Where is he from? Where did he go to high school? How did he meet Skylar? What are his parents names?
