The Insect Species in "Enders Game". They were never a threat but Ender all but Destroyed their species because he was lied to about the final battle being the real attack rather than a simulation.

For sure. And as a society we still haven’t accepted his wisdom

to be fair Gaston also kidnapped the old man and was using him as leverage to marry the daughter.

So you know, essentially the same plan, but Gaston didn’t have a whole castle of people furniture depending on him finding a wife

He knew what it would take to be the best. Bonus points because he was yelling at Miles Teller the whole time.

Had to look up the character name, but William Foster (Michael Douglas) in Falling Down gets more and more reasonable as I get older.

Thanos is the easy answer. He just went about it in a bad way

Gunnery Sgt Hartman in Full Metal Jacket. He was doing his job getting those young men ready for war. Pvt. Pyle was a fat slob, sneaking doughnuts in and crap. Once Gunny got on his arse, he got in shape and became a killing machine, just focused on the wrong person.

It is one of those strange moral dilemmas.

Gotham is a perfect example of a society so broken and tragic that excision via complete destruction isn’t inappropriate.

If you look at the overall history of Batman, he hasn’t actually succeeded at fixing anything. Gotham never improves.

After stopping Ras, Gotham becomes substantially worse. By the 3rd movie, a time period of ~10 years, the government of Gotham had nearly been wiped out and the entire city was put under siege resulting in even worse mayhem.

Society has a tendency to sleepwalk towards destruction because no one is willing to make a hard decision and accept the repercussions.

As for the topic at hand, Law Abiding Citizen is the gold standard.
