Giant Freakin Robot

The legendary actor and comedian was a true fan of the property and there were apparently a number of instances where he proved his love of everything Star Trek. In fact, it got to a point where he was actually going to star in a very notable episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation that was written especially for him.

quote:

The Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “A Matter of Time” was written by Rick Berman specifically for Robin Williams to play the part of Berlinghoff Rasmussen, a time traveler who claims to be from the future but is revealed to be a thief from the past who is stealing artifacts and technology from the future for his own profit. Scheduling issues ended up preventing Williams from playing the part and character actor Matt Frewer ended up in the role. It is often considered one of the better episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and it would have been incredible to see Williams in the role of the goofball thief.

Star Trek Wiki About the Episode

I would have loved to see Williams in TNG.

He was a theif from the past who was stealing technology from the present, his future, although he claimed to be from the present's future, which was also his future.

And, to his credit, Frewer did a good job with the role, but another Star Trek regular (Dwight Schultz) is about the only other person I can contemplate attempting it at the time.

Obviously, Jim Carrey was too young, but Robin was really one of a kind. I don't think I would have signed on to do it without some tweaking it to fit me.

I would put you in the Sheldon category. Sadly that makes me Leonard as I knew it too.

Well, I'm going off the nerd deep end and add another TNG episode that the main guest actor was not available. In "The Most Toys" the role of "Fajo" was played by Warehouse 13 Alum Saul Rubinek and nailed it. With that said, he was actually the replacement because the original actor, who was a midget, filmed a few scenes and committed suicide during the week of filming.

Here's a scenes that were completed:

The Most Toys

I apologize for going off topic but I couldn't help myself.

The late, great David Rappaport (probably best known to U.S. audiences for his role in Time Bandits and leading role in The Wizard) only attempted suicide during the filming of The Most Toys. He was successful, later in the year, tragically taking his own life just 5 days before The Most Toys aired.

This echoes the first significant little person to appear in Star Trek, Michael Dunn (Alexander in Plato's Stepchildren, about the only high quality thing about the poorly regarded, Season 3 episode was his performance), who was rumored (for years) to have committed suicide because of the lack of details released at the time. Turns out, it was the chronic health problems that plague so many little people also got Mr. Dunn at a very young age.

I think the very first little people to appear on Star Trek were in Season 2's Journey to Babel:

I read that wrong. I thought he took his life during the filming of that episode which is why he had to be replaced. Of course attempting suicide will get you off the set as well.
