A critical point is it’s going to be a black Kal-el. fricking ridiculous, that is, a race swap of an existing character and probably the most well known comic character ever

so rewrite Kryptonian history to include black people on a now annihilated planet?

Pandering for the sake of finding a way to sell old IP back to people who have already bought is one thing...that’s just cynical marketing.

But comic book characters get re-imagined in different ways all the time, often times in interesting ways that put a legitimate new spin on the character.

I mean, Red Son re-imagined Superman as a commie.

Just asking a question here. Wouldn't this be considered racist saying that black kryptonians destroyed their own planet?

So apparently today is Henry Cavill's birthday. Interesting timing

What is the status of the DCEU? I heard they were going to focus more on individual characters, but I’ve heard nothing about them officially undoing the shared universe altogether.

I mean, WW84 just came out. Somewhere in that universe, Henry Cavill Superman is still doing stuff.

Well yeah, because it's not like JJ Abrams couldn't direct black people. WTF?

JJ can't direct white people either. They shouldn't hire a bad director.

yeah its just dumb....If you went through casting and you decided this guy would be the perfect super man...and also happened to be black, there's one thing.

This "we need a black super man and it needs to be directed by a black person" shite just makes no sense. Its WB once again trying to emulate something that worked elsewhere and hoping for similar results "Oh they loved Black Panther....well let's give them a black superman!"

Well to be fair, even if this happened no one who has this complaint now would ever believe that’s how it went down.

With as much as people scream that whites have no culture, non-whites sure do love to appropriate that non-existent culture.

Not a comic book guy, so I don't know if this is a question with an obvious answer, but...

Are there NO black Kryptonians in Superman lore? Must they try and shoehorn blackness into Kal-El?

I think that's where other posters have hit the nail on the head. It isn't that Superman is being cast for the first time, and it just happens that the perfect actor for the role is black, or that there's a history of Kal-El being black, but rather they're trying to force the race issue in where it's canonically retarded.

Also, I love how it's literally "one source." So it's probably not even an "insider at Warners/DC," it's prolly just some random idiot on Twitter.

Noticed that as well most likely just being reported to get clicks from outrage mobs and woke followers

Nice that they cite these as failures and neglect to point out that Christopher Reeve was a complete unknown and launched a hugely successful franchise.

Well, the first two were highly successful; but Reeves was not at fault for the failure of the next two.

The black Superman, Calvin Ellis, of the comics multiverse had a few good stories, but is mostly pretty lame. Since DC has already failed with this character concept in the comics it seems completely likely that Warner would want to develop one for the big screen.

In 1971 they added a brief blurb of Kryptonians with black skin living on Vathlo Island of Krypton. They were called Vathlothians; it didn't amount to many stories but was revisited later on. Iph-Ro of Vathlo was a black Kryptonian who appeared later on, and Earth-23 has a black Superman on Earth (Kalel, who has the secret identity of Calvin Ellis), and there's some Vathlothians in Kandor and therefor survived the destruction of Krypton.

The big thing was that, when originally created, Superman was the "Last Son of Krypton". Early stories rarely dug into the demographics of Krypton beyond Superman's immediate family. It really didn't have people wondering if all people of Krypton were white until writers started writing more and more stories about Krypton before it was destroyed. It didn't help that DC lagged behind Marvel in creating new characters of color (Black Panther had his own title in 1966; Black Lightning was DC's first to have his own comic run and didn't come about until 1977). This is a clear example of how Stan Lee used his comics to reflect the movements of the time (how the X-Men reflected the Civil Rights Movement, how the Fantastic Four reflected the Space Race and Cold War, etc) while DC lagged far behind in these, usually keeping their series fairly static until jumping in on these issues in the 70s and 80s.

But yeah, going back to what you were saying - if the movie is set on Earth-23, for example, then Superman IS black. Just as Red Son is an alternate Earth with Superman in communist Soviet Union, this movie could be set there.

I blame the stories lacking strength on the fact that they made him President. It's too much, IMHO. Better to give him a job that keeps him in touch with the common person - makes for a better dichotomy between the hero persona and the secret identity.

They modeled him after Obama LINK, so he had to be president.

Yeah, just a shortsighted decision by Grant Morrison - clearly he didn't think of the character being used in the long-term. That decision now means that any positive attributes will be seen as condoning Obama, while any negative ones be seen as condemning him. The character is tied too tightly to a real world person - that makes it hard to write good stories for those kinds of characters.

I agree completely. He is both the most powerful man in the world, and the most powerful superhero in the world. What can legitimately threaten him. If done properly it should set him up for a great villain arc.
