Thoughts on Tar (2022)

Ok, coming into this movie, I didn’t really know what to expect.
And what I got was a (mostly) accurate portrayal of how people in power are so callous to those around them. Too often in movies, we see people cartoonishly evil. Where in fact, where a lot of this movie succeeds early on is the almost documentary like nature of Tar’s life as she goes from meeting to meeting, making decision without ever really considering the consequences.
The movie is also keen on the question of when does art become problematic due to the artist. The movie never really answers it, but it does throw in lots of opinions and examples. Eventually, though, if you can’t work with your peers, talent loses out. I think that is really strongly shown in the Juilliard lecture which works on multiple levels. That really is an amazing scene.
I will say this movie is pretty damn dense. Like I love classics music but there’s a ton of music talk in it and a ton of classics music references that mean nothing to me.
I do think the movie is too long. There were a couple aspects of the ending that I didn’t like and it didn’t make sense. Doesn’t really matter to me for a movie like this though. I thought the first 3/4ths of the movie were very strong and overall, if your intellectually curious, there’s a lot to be had.

They're doing a re-release of this at my local theater. I wanted to go see it today, but godammit for being so beautiful outside today.

Wonderful film. It's streaming on Peacock now as well.

I have an interview on my phone with a composer that talks about music in exactly the same way as the people do in this movie. He talks about seeing the comedy in how it’s written and how he tries to put his own voice on things. He talked about how studying under So and so helped give him a particar style in regards to certain areas of music.
Wish there had been a bit more of that.

Haven't seen it yet, but my sister said she shut it off early last night, which is unusual for her even if she hates something. So that means I'll probably enjoy it.
To quote the text I got from her, "the longest, most drawn-out scenes of pretentious nonsense".

I mean, it’s a character study. And a highly realistic movie painting the portrait as close to life as possible. A lot does have to be established. But it all serves a point.
The movie isn’t pretentious at all. It explains everything you need to know thoroughly. To explain to you what’s actually happening. The movie is dense. It assumes it’s viewers are adults and don’t have to be pandered to.
I don’t know much about elite orchestras operate on a global scale. I thought the movie did a great job of teaching you a lot all within context of the movie

I'm not doubting you. I plan on giving it a shot.
However, my sister has worked and lived in Hollywood for 16 years. Not that that itself means anything, but she's an adult who has watched a lot of different things over the years, which is why I thought her reactions to Tar were interesting.

All good. I can see people not liking it. Just giving my understanding having finished it right when I made the OP.
I do think though it’s weird people are trying to paint it as some art house movie though and it’s not. Not saying your sister was but I have seen people saying that. The movie does have a certain way of playing with recent Hollywood stereotypes

That, I do agree with. She’s obviously full of shite. Hence why “apartment for sale” is such a beautiful song, truly show casing her quality

It was fine.
She was good in it. But it was a tough 2:30 to get all the way through
Wasn’t as powerful a performance as everyone had hyped it up to be
