Thoughts on Avatar 2 (non spoilers)

Figured why not do a non spoiler thread.
I thought it was pretty great. Honestly had people cheering at the end which was extremely unexpected. Excited how they proceed.
I saw it in imax 3d. As you might imagine, it’s extremely well done. The 3D really helps blend the cgi and provide a weight that I haven’t ever really felt before. If this is the way more movies start looking in their ability to have believes le fantastical setting, I’m thrilled. At first the visuals do stand out a lot but you eventually get used to them.
As you might expect, the action is phenomenal. There is a strange viciousness to it I kinda felt shocking. And that goes into the weight of things mentioned above.
The plot is kinda ridiculous.
Most shocking of all, is, unlike Avatar 1, I did find myself caring for the characters a lot.
And it was funnier than I thought.
It was too long by a lot. Like seriously cut like 30 to 40 minutes easily. Without even trying. There is soooooo many shots of swiming. They lose their impact. At times you feel like your watching a nature documentary than an action movie. It was extremely cheesy. I’m not going to say there aren’t moments where I didn’t feel like rolling my eyes.
But what good movies do is make you not care about their deficiencies.

This is refreshing since everyone has been gearing up to hate it for no reason.

Yeah, I mean people are going to shite on it and it won’t be for everyone. But I honestly didn’t care.
I didn’t watch any trailers so I was fully u aware of what happened so I don’t know if the trailers prepared people that there are large portions of the movie that follow characters I didn’t expect. I didn’t have a problem with it because they were shockingly likable but the movie does a whole lot of character establishment

The reason for the hate of the original was not the movie itself. It was a result the people who went nuts over it and became evangelical about it. To the point where they angrily confronted others who did not like it.
"How dare you not worship this film like I do??" REEEEEEE!
I had a female relative who went batshit crazy like that at a family gathering when the first movie came out. She had never mentioned movies before then or since.
I fear the Christmas gathering this year.

You tell us you like it but follow with a huge negative about it dragging and you rolling your eyes…. Which is it?

Man that third act was brilliant
Yes it could’ve been so much shorter. Plenty of time for pee breaks in the first 2 hours for sure
Liked it way more than the first one .
As the movie was going on , I couldn’t help but see where JC drew his inspirations from the “Hatari” “Commando” and “Titanic” for starters .
Also: at some point late in the movie I thought , wait isn’t Kate winslet supposed to be in this, looked up the cast and found out who she was supposed to be and it sounded nothing like her at all.

I think most people shot on the original because it ripped off so many movies and didn’t try and do anything new other than visuals.
Luckily, while cheesy, I do think this movie tries to stand on its own legs story wise

My only hatred comes from it being nominated for an Oscar and being the favorite to win. Complete joke.
It was fine and pretty to look at but, it gets the same critical eye as Black Panther… it’s fun but come on guys.

No spoilers!
But yeah, 1st act and 3rd act were great. The 2nd act had a real difficult job to pull and it just let itself wander

Those aren’t mutually exclusive.
Rolling eyes isn’t necessarily negative. It was more like “y’all really doing this? Ok, I’ll buy in because I’m enjoying it.”
The length also, I didn’t know how long the movie was so I kept expecting it to be almost over lol. Not going to lose sleep over it. Many great movies drag

I thought it was pretty great as well, I knew how long it was going into it and I didnt have a problem with the length at all, never even checked my phone to see what time it was.
What did you find ridiculous about the plot?

I anticipated this with Cameron at the helm of it. I'm sure he wants to make sure he shows off the CGI effects and have the audience mesmerized. I relate that idea to the OG Lord of the Rings being filmed where it was and all those scenes of them traveling. The film wanted to show all that landscape as much as they could. Cameron definitely wants to do that with these movies too.

Well, this is non spoilers.
But the stuff with a certain friendship that was just like, were they super high when they wrote this?. And just because it’s ridiculous doesn’t mean it’s bad. I liked that friendship. It’s just weird and pushes at my suspension of disbelief.
