Those who saw the OG SW trilogy in theaters, which were you more hyped for?

After seeing Star Wars and having that film sink in..
When the Empire Struck Back 3 years later, what was the hype like around it? And do you remember if Return of the Jedi had an even bigger anticipation towards it?
I cant help to think that today we take blockbuster size films for granted. Plus everything is ruined by the internet (surprises, cameos, etc). Back then, seems you only had previews, posters and TV spots if lucky.

I shite my pants when Star Wars came out.
Literally. I’m 45.

Star Wars in 1976(7) was getting national news pub because of the rumored special effects breakthrough. Only a short preview was available but was enough to get Sci-Fi juices going.
The opening week buzz was incredible. The country went nuts over Star Wars.
The Empire Strikes Back was much anticipated and the release timing was perfect. And the third installment od Jedi — because Empire was such a smash — was just as anticipated but a little of a let down because of the Ewok crap.
Empire still the best of the early movies.

I was a senior in high school, but wasn't a sci-fi geek, so didn't see Star Wars, the first movie, until one of the re-releases, either 78 or 79. After finally seeing the first one, I was really excited for Empire. Articles in the newspapers and previews of the movies at the theater were the only hyping I remember. There were probably some magazines I never saw with articles about the movies.

Star Wars by far had the most hype of the original trilogy. The whole country went bonkers over it. And I mean straight god damned bonkers. There hasn’t been anything like it since.
Of the two sequels, I think I was more hyped for Return of the Jedi than Empire Strikes Back. But that was only by a little bit and probably because of what happened in Empire. Star Wars didn’t leave us hanging for Empire like Empire left us hanging for Jedi.

Jedi…by then studios had fully grasped marketing and creating a build up prior to release. There was hype for Empire ( the best of the 3) but nothing like Jedi.
Jedi anticipation and marketing was everywhere.

It was a big deal when it came out. Hype as you noted was different, the novelization, comics, TShirts and some toys were released before the movie. We obviously knew when it was over there was going to be a 3rd with the cliff hanger ending with Star Wars we thought there could be a sequel since Vader survived the Death Star but weren’t 100% sure leaving the theater.
One thing I remember about Jedi was the title was originally Revenge of the Jedi, there were some posters floating around a year before it came out.
Also they rereleased Star Wars in 82 and I think there was a teaser trailer or at least Jedi was mentioned

Sequels were not common, so I didn't really know what Empire was going to be. Wasn't even sure if it would be the same characters or something else in that universe. You HAD to hunt info/rumors back then. I don't think the younger generation can really grasp that now. Maybe you could find a magazine article speculating about the movie?
Return of the Jedi was huge though. Especially with how Empire ended.

No doubt, I hated the damn Ewoks.
But the space battle over Endor was the best of the series I thought.

This is the only one I was old enough for, but agree Return of the Jedi was everywhere. Go to the kids' shoe store to get some new Keds, get a Yoda poster. And we had illustrated books and crap before the movie came out.

Well, I was 7 when Star Wars came out and I saw it when there were still long lines to get in, so I was pretty stoked about that. The idea that there would be ANOTHER Star Wars movie was awesome, so I was super excited for Empire. By the time Return came out, I was 13 and still really excited. I do remember seeing the trailer for Jedi in the theater and commercials on TV and thinking that there was so much space fighter stuff going on in the scenes I'd seen that I was worried I'd even be able to keep track of it all on screen!
Plus, this was still the early days of cross marketing so after Star Wars and beginning with Empire it was literally everywhere, lunch boxes to fast food places, to signage in stores to unlimited amounts of toys. It was the best.

Yup...all of that. When you're literally swimming in information it's harder to get excited for any one thing.

People thought nothing of going to see the original Star Wars over and over at the show, much like kids would later watch a DVD repeatedly or now stream.
Movies weren't so expensive, especially during the day, and Star Wars ran for years. It became popular to go see it repeatedly. Over two years, I must've seen Star Wars 10-15 times at the theater, it never grew old.
Sadly, a lot of kids left the theater hating the more recent final installment. Disney and their creative asshats will never fully acknowledge the damage done to Star Wars.

Star Wars. I was ten and do not remember if I had a clue what I was about to see. I am pretty sure me and my next door neighbor sat in our chairs for 5 minutes with our jaws dropped.
Empire. I was excited, but I remember not getting why there was another movie.
Return. I was probably most hyped for this one. The way Empire just ended, I needed more.

I was 7 when Star Wars came out. Saw it 17 times in the theater. It seems like it stayed in theaters forever, though.
When Empire came out, I was expecting Boba Fett to be a major character and only saw it in the theater a couple of times.
Don't remember much media hype for Empire or ROTJ, but there really didn't need to be any marketing. People were going to pack the theaters for both.
I was in Junior High when ROTJ came out and remember a kid claiming to have it on betamax before it was in theaters but always assumed that he was lying.

Didn't know what I was walking into when I saw the first one so I'd say ESB.

Bizarrely, the Plitt at Twin City Mall stopped the Empire Strikes back right in the middle..as in just stopped the projector.
They turned the lights on in the theater and ushers came down both aisles selling popcorn & cokes.
It resumed after about 10-15 minutes but was always strange to me.
Even stranger is I got in line to see it about 7am and the line stretched all the way around Selber Brothers. It was a BIG DEAL to make it in because you had another 3 hour wait if you didn't.

Empire, but that was because I didn't really know what to expect from Star Wars and it blew me away. Saw SW 13 times in the theater.
Was so pumped for Empire. Even had all the glasses from Burger King (back then you got actual drinking glasses)

Jedi. No contest.
A bit of that may have to do with me personally. I was 10 years old when Jedi came out and FULLY ate up with all things Star Wars.
