So I only ever watched season 1. I just rewatched it, and still love it. Into S2 now, and does it get better? 4 episodes in and its boring and some of the new characters suck.

Look, season 2 is understandably “worse” during your first watch. What you fell in love with is not the main plot. But understand, the main plot in the projects is still the driving force of the show. They are just showing different aspects of Baltimore.
Season 2 kicks arse. I didn’t realize it until my 2nd watch

Season 2, after watching all of the seasons becomes much much more enjoyable. The jump from the towers to the supply is a very abrupt one, which was hard on the first watch of season 2. But you will put Frank Sobatka in your top 5 Wire characters after it's all said and done. Seasons 3 and 4 pick right back up where 1 left off, so stick with it, for sure.

Stick with it. Season 2 does seem boring at first but it sets up everything for the rest of the show. Seasons 3, 4 and 5 and 5 are great television.

Lol, it’s pretty much been said, and the sentiments completely NAILED in this thread already….. but I watched each season of the Wire as they were released on HBO. And YES, I was so incredibly mad and disappointed for about 6 episodes of season 2, cuz they had completely fricked up everything I loved about season 1.
That wasn’t the case for very long though….. now season 2 can be my favorite, depending on which day it is. But it’s easily the most rewatched season for me. In hindsight, it’s fricking incredible about how it was not only necessary, but PERFECT in terms of “Big Picture” and how it propelled the Wire into being the best written show EVER!!! IMO IMHO FWIW PIIHB.

I have tried this series at least 5 times because I have heard how amazing it is.

and yes, season 2 is a way different vibe than season 1, but you will grow to love it, and seasons 3 and 4 are some of the best television in history.

Season 2 is great and really expands the show. Season 5 was the only disappointment.
