I know Avon taking a charge was part of the story, but was anyone else wishing he would have made the move on Marlo at the rim shop before the bust?

I was a little sad just like Jimmy when the Barskdale and Bell gang fell.

Season 3 with Rawls in Comstat is some of the best scenes ever put on film. He’s at his prime there.

Hamsterdam and the aftermath leading up to and through season 4 is about as good as TV gets

No, Marlo was part of the vicious cycle. Side note, Season 2 was much better whenever I rewatched the entire season

Season 2 is my favorite. It gets better every watch. On my 5th or 6th watch now.

This is my favorite season by a good margin. The Cheese and Ziggy scene..."You paid $2500 for this?"

When I think how jarring it was the first time through - I never "hated" it like some Wire folks clearly do (or did, back in the day), I got why folks didn't care for Season 2. I can't say it is my "favorite", because Season 1 is SO good, but 2 is right there - 3 and 4 are still good in their own way. Sort of like the opposite of Season 2, Season 5 sort of gets worse every time (except for Clark Johnson's "Gus" character which is about the only redeeming thing about the season, except for the series finale episode, which Clark Johnson directed.)

(Nerd crossover note, Clark Johnson directed the Pilot AND Finale of both The Wire and The Shield. Since he also directed 3 of the first 5 episodes of both those series, his style set the tone for both series' runs - this alone puts him in the running for GOAT television director.

Season two has the disadvantage of being the first change in story/narrative that you experience with the Wire

Season 1 takes a long time to really get going and finishes up so strong that hopping to this new place with these new characters feels so wrong when you first watch it. By the end of S2 i was even more hooked on the show.

When they do the same thing in subsequent seasons, it doesn’t feel as jarring as the first time so it allows you to feel more comfortable with that change

Yep.

Season 2 is definitely better on the rewatch. I never hated it. But I enjoyed it a lot more the second time.

I’m sad that Jimmy and Co. didn’t get to take Stringer down though.

I watched The Wire so long ago I can't remember what happened in Season 3.

I know I watched the entire series 3-4 times though, great show.

Shakespearean. It was like he had given away his heart once he knew he had to betray Stringer, who had double betrayed him. What would have the show done? Slim Charles ending up working for Marlo and later helping to buy him out is priceless.

It was like a 1 seed upset in the first round by a 16. No one wanted it...but the shock factor and what that 16 did the following 2 seasons was something wild. It settled with me eventually. Marlo and Avon never even verbally exchanged words until season 5. And Avon helped out the same guy who went after his life.

No doubt. He is as good in 5 when talking about the homeless killings. He roasts his colonels and majors in 3.

The weakest of the seasons but what Lester and Jimmy did was gold.

Also, sad to see the emergence of FAKE NEWS. And that motherfricker got the Pulitzer. Hard working newspaper guys like Gus and the Spanish female Alma were heart-felt. I hated it when the young black reporter told her "They're dead where it doesn't count" as to why her homicide story barely got a blurb on page 5. But when she found Scott's notepad? Priceless.

I rank the seasons this way. And I have ranked them probably 4 different ways.

4...the best acting. Kids steal the show.

2...underrated. 2 and perhaps even 3 major stories going on, appearing as separate, but all part of the same. Frank was amazing and so was Nick.

3...almost like rewatching season 1, but with a much more compelling storyline as opposed to just Avon and Omar gunning for each other. Mouzone's return changes the entire show.

1...it was good but also you can tell it was first and had less of a budget.

5...already said it was good. I do understand the pushback and it was the only season that felt outlandish. Lester cracking their code though? And the circumstances that kept EVERY major police and lawyer and city hall character from going to jail was just so frickin hilarious but spot on.
