Anybody else watching? Stellar cast: Toni Collette, Colin Firth, Sophie Turner, Parker Posey and the guy that played Richard Sackler on Dopesick. 3 episodes dropped Thursday. Good so far.

The documentary was better.

Although Firth COMPLETELY nails that weirdos mannerisms.

Honestly, the Netflix docuseries was so in depth I literally have no idea why this was made.

I would say because it’s been 18 years since the documentary, so please of people aren’t familiar with it.

The Elizabeth Holmes documentary was so much more recent, and that’s why I didn’t have much interest in watching The Dropout.

Yeah I enjoyed the first episode but I have doubts it will be able to keep my interest when there’s no way they have more detail in it, instead it’ll just be a dramatized version that just kind of colors inside the lines

They also nailed the bum frick DA too. And I do love the potential of the Stuhlbarg casting, but that guy was so awesome in the doc it’s gonna be hard to live up

Only thing that seems to be different in this series is that him dating the producer of the documentary seems to be a major plot point (she was at the end of episode 1 when he was old)

The Netflix version/docuseries was real popular a couple of years ago.

That’s not exactly the case tho. Netflix did an update to the case with like 3 added episodes in 2018 which is when this documentary really hit the mainstream and became an IP that every streaming service wanted a part of

Stuhlbarg

Definitely throwing heat. He's an underrated character actor for sure. That was my immediate thought when he was revealed. I was like ARNOLD ROTHSTEIN

Other than some of the actors nailing their character's mannerisms, the only thing of value was the (acted) reenactment of how he thinks she died (in episode 2 I think).

Thanks for the recommendation. I vaguely remember the case, but I didn’t watch the documentary. I love those actors so I’ll give it a watch and save the documentary for another time.

Watching....It's OK. Documentary obviously better. Still don't know if he did it but I just don't think there is enough evidence to convict

IMO whether he did it or not is beside the point, even if he did it, the DA fricked around and cheated so much and so blatantly to try to get that conviction that you cannot reasonably trust any of the states evidence

I think the reason this was made was to give a different perspective to the documentary. One of the issues with the French documentary was the relationship Peterson had with and editor on the crew. I think this series is gonna give a different view than the socumentary and may get into the flaws of the documentary.

You are correct. They botched it up

We started watching tonight. Good cast. I haven’t thought about Dane Dahaan in a long time. That scifi movie with the weird model chick must have set his career back a bit.

I’m mildly familiar with the case but upon further research and realizing that Mike F’ing Nifong was involved with the prosecution, I’m tempted to give Peterson the benefit of the doubt. That’s the kind of guy that puts doubt in all the legal system.

I remember watching the documentary and thinking how cultish the kids acted. Such a bizarre family

I can't believe how much mileage they've gotten out of this a-hole. He definitely did it. The miniseries documentary was hopelessly biased. If you read a book about it, you'll see what they left out and how obvious it is that he did it.

The director had earlier directed a very good doc on a black kid in Florida that was nearly railroaded by the legal system - if not for the film. Thus, he showed up for the Staircase extra primed to find the same thing. He didn't. He just tried to make it look like he did. Don't waste your time.

I love how they keep teasing the whole owl theory.

I know, so preposterous. Do you listen to the Criminal podcast? It is really excellent - outside of the fact that its inaugural episode is about this stupid owl thing.

I remember listening to Serial, and having loved it so much I sought out other true crime podcasts. Found Criminal, and after listening to that first episode I found it to be awful and never revisited it again lol.

Then I saw The Staircase and Netflix and thought it sounded very familiar, but didn’t realize it was the same case until much later.

So what you guys think, did he kill her? I tend to lean yes he did, but I go back and forth the more I re-visit this case and watch the documentary and the HBO drama.

I'm genuinely not sure one way or the other.
