Love the little iq callback with the principal. “No offense John, but I gotta iq of 136 it’s been tested”

re: The Many Saints of Newark • Trailer • Sopranos Prequel Series
According to the wiki for the movie Gandolfini had never watched the Soprano's prior to being cast in the film.

Seems odd...

eta-I checked it out as I thought Tony's mom was being played by Falco in the movie but that is Vera Farminga. Thought Falco would be an odd choice.

Not really. He was a kid when it was in production. He probably never felt like watching it after his father passed. I can understand that.

My ultimate wish for this is a reveal that Tony killed Dickie Moltisanti.

I know this might not work in the existing cannon as Tony made his bones by killing Willie Overall in 1982. However if the murder is shown to be personal and not mob related that can still work, as generally making bones is done as a contract killing.

It would also deepen a few things in the series. One it would explain why Tony handled himself so well while doing the hit on Overall. It would also give further explanation as to why Tony gave Chris so much leeway, and give Tony some motivation to give Chrissy a boogeyman to hate to take heat off of himself when he thought Chris might start to put thing together.

Also secret non-business related murders are not out of Tony's character. He killed Ralphie for personal reasons. Maybe there is a personal unknown beef that led to Tony killing Dickie.

I think maybe Dickie is gonna be killed because he puts his neck of for something young Tony does, which is why Tony feels so intent on being close to Christopher. Could be off on that one. I imagine Liotta is "old man Dimeo"or a NJ boss and from the scene where Johnny Boy (Bernthal) and Uncle Jr. tell Livia that they'll "talk to Tony" but he "only listens to Dickie" might indicate that Jr. and Johnny Boy didn't want Tony in the life (although from the series it seems that Jr. and Johnny Boy didn't object and that Tony made his dad proud while he was living.

Also: in the scene where a crew of guys breaks a door down in a quick cut scene, definitely looks like a young Big Pussy busting through the door, it has to be his character.

That can’t be right. That looked just like her and sounded like her. CGI maybe?

That right there is one of the things that made the series special. It was all things. Human drama. Mobster porn. But also very funny.

Didn't see much funny in the trailer--but maybe you can't do funny in a trailer.

Hope for the best. But I think Breaking Bad could have done without the follow on movie.

That's why I went and checked. I thought it was Falco in the trailer but just looked at it again and it's definitely Farminga.

The timeline does seem off though.
From all indications on the series,Tony graduated from HS in the mid to early 70's and this is set in 1967?

ETA Tony's birthday is 1959

I’ve always wondered why it seemed Tony held such a soft spot for Christopher.

Maltesanti means "many saints" in Italian. Looking like Chrissy's dad is the main character.

Does it get better? I listened to the first episode and the audio quality was terrible.

It sounded just like Carmella but I knew it wasn't because I had seen already that Farminga was cast for the role. I'm guessing its going with the theme that Melfi and Tony talked about how he married Carmella and treated her like the mother he wished he had or whatever the frick was going on in the psychology department of the series.

The school sounding voice call at the very beginning sounds like Tony's coach Mollanaro from is dream "You're not prepared" as well as the shot of the school hall looks very similar to the halls of the school Tony was in in the dream.

I will say though, part of what made the Sopranos so timeless and great was that it doubled as a dark comedy and this doesn't look very funny. Movie format might not have been the best choice (although I'm still super hyped).

It probably starts in 1967 (Newark Riots) and shifts to the mid-70s.
