Damn, I had forgotten had incredibly good this classic was. Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne at their peak in a John Ford Western...Damn fine classic. The cast was fantastic.

First inkling I ever had of this moving even existing was from a line in a Jimmy Buffett song.

An all timer. That and The Searchers might be my favorite Westerns ever.

One of my all-time favorite westerns. Movie fact: Stewart really didn't want to be part of it thinking he was too old to play a young Ransom Stoddard heading out west to practice law, but I'm glad he did.

I also like that they shot it in black and white.

Like you said, great cast full of well known actors.

I can't say that it's the Duke's greatest performance, but it's the greatest performance I've ever seen.

Agree totally. He was a major part of that movie, but really took the back seat to Stewart in actual screen time. I think he said the word "Pilgrim" something like 23 times in that movie.

I think "Rio Bravo", "The Searchers", "True Grit" and "Rooster Cogburn" were some of Wayne's best roles.

I also put his last film up there in "The Shootist" with Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, Scatman Cruthers, Harry Morgan as the Marshall and Jimmy Stewart as the Dr. as another one of my favorites.

The aging gunfighter dying of cancer was art imitating life as Wayne would eventually die from that very same disease a couple years after the movies release.

I didn't expect so much response from this thread. I just threw it up there as a nod to the film and moved on. I'm happy others appreciated this little piece of Americana as much as I.

One of the things that got my attention early was how mean Liberty Valance was. For the time, seeing such a vicious attack with the Liberty Whip on Stewart was intense. Then he attacks the newspaper owner in the same manner but even more vicious.

One other thing. I though Vera Miles was gorgeous in this film.

Seen them all. But, there was something about his understated performance in TMWSLV that I thought was his best performance. Usually, Wayne was bigger than life. As you stated, in this film he took somewhat of a backseat to Jimmy Stewart and it was just an enjoyable film.

It could also be mentioned in the string from yesterday dealing with surprise endings.

That theme song can get stuck in your head!

I heard it on the radio recently, and days later it was still going.

One of my favorite lines is in this movie...

"Liberty Valance is the toughest man south of the Picket Wire...next to me."

My all-time favorite movie. Anytime I see that it is on, I watch it through the end.

"Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance"...I tear up, every time I hear that line.

Mandela effect. The song wasn't the theme song for the movie. It was written after watching the movie, and was more of a tribute to it.

Liberty Valance: You got a choice, Dishwasher. Either you get out of town, or tonight you be out on that street alone. You be there, and don't make us come and get you.

Tom Doniphon: [to Ransom Stoddard] Hey, pilgrim! You forgot your pop-gun!

Tom Doniphon: I know those law books mean alot to you, but not out here. Out here a man settles his own problems.
