Great movie. Watched it while flying over Japan and Pacific on the way home from a return trip to Vietnam in 2004. Bought the DVD, then Blu-ray to view again a few times at home.
Oddly, I also watched Kill Bill 1 on flight back.

Loved the movie, my biggest complaint is it felt like a high quality Shogun rip off, which made really just want a well made Shogun movie.
I don’t see how Shogun could be done with anything less than a mini-series. Two regular seasons would be closer to ideal for me

I saw it as a kid when it came out and 2 random things I took from this movie was I had to start calling random people Bob and finding a way to insert "Jolly Good" into a conversation for no reason
I agree with the going native plot being a little redundant but also think between all the versions of that story this one is the best that comes to mind
Cruise's character is haunted by the atrocities he committed and allowed to be committed and finds by accident a better life that actually presents his soul peace and a form of redemption(whether he died or actually made it back to the samurai village)
Avatar dude just wanted blue poon/working legs again
and Costner...also wanted poon but was mostly just lonely on the plains and starting to lose his mind
The Cruise character by comparison had some depth and a legitimate reason for deflecting especially considering it was meant to show his growth of doing something you believe is right vs doing the wrong thing and profiting off it either as a Captain or as War Hero Rifle Salesman

Last Samurai was one of the last great epics ever made. It's a shame that they don't make movies like this any more
I can’t think of many attempts at Epic in the last 10 years.
I guess you could give some nods to Endgame, 1917, Dunkirk, or the like in the last 10 years but the 90s and 2000s pumped out Braveheart, LotR, Patriot, Gladiator, Last of Mohicans, Apollo 13, Troy, etc.
To the OP, Last Samurai is a fantastic movie. Saw it with a bunch of friends in college and was really surprised.

One movie that probably ruined the Epic genre in Hollywood was The Postman (1997) with Kevin Costner.
Costner was already skating on thin ice after Waterworld happened. But The Postman was a major bomb and slowed the momentum of the grand epics of the post-Dances With Wolves era.
Miramax launching a concentrated attack on the Academy Awards with artsy, character dramas like Good Will Hunting and Shakespeare in Love also decreased the prestige of the 1990s Hollywood epics like Dances With Wolves and Braveheart and Titanic.

Think I’ve read a few articles saying my generation just doesn’t have the attention span to justify filming something like Samurai, Patriot, Braveheart etc. They want a 90-120 minute movie

Before we start bashing Millennials (again, and again, and again), let’s remember that Millennials now regularly consume their epics in the form of 10 part Netflix series that they binge in one sitting.

Which is crazy because unless I’m seeing a kids movie, I expect it to be 2-3 hours movie.
I went and saw Croods 2 yesterday at 1 PM and was shocked when I walked out of the theater at 2:50.

If you want a long, sweeping epic of epic proportions that is visually and audibly sumptuous then I strongly suggest sitting with two buckets of popcorn and watch Lawrence of Arabia.
You also get a great story with a storyline that still fits today.

Decent movie but hated the ending. The tacked on scene allowing Cruise to chew the scenery in front of the Emperor was very lame.

I just watched this again over the holidays. Pulled it out along with Master & Commander and Kingdom of Heaven. Great flick and agree with everyone on here.

I still think the end scene is cringe though.
Tom Cruise should have died.
Great movie though.

That’s funny, watched KoH for probably the 50th time this weekend.
The DC might be my favorite film of all time
