Just finished this one for probably the 4th or 5th time. Hell of a movie, criminally underrated.

Loved the movie, my biggest complaint is it felt like a high quality Shogun rip off, which made really just want a well made Shogun movie.

It used to be on AMC a ton, which is how I finally ended up watching it one day when nothing else was on. Was blown away. The cinematography, choreography of the fight scenes, and the old samurai honor code story were all so much better than I imagined. I'm surprised it didn't spark a resurgence in samurai movies.

Even better, its epic scope needs more than a couple of hours.

One of Cruise's last real roles before he went full Jackie Chan. I'd say War of the Worlds was his last real attempt to act, but then the couch happened and the Scientology doc clip was released and it was over for him ever being able to play a real person again.

I enjoy his action movies and all, but old Tom Cruise was really enjoyable. Hard to believe Last Samurai was 17 years ago.
Ken Watanabe is the real winner in Last Samurai.

If Last Samurai and War of the Worlds count, so should Valkeryie, which is more of a historical drama than an action movie.
If there’s one limitation (I wouldn’t say “flaw”) of Last Samurai, is that it’s one of at least three movies with the exact same “going native” narrative. (The other two I’m thinking of are Dances With Wolves and Avatar.) I think Samurai is the superior version of the story, but it is essentially the same story.

This movie is hardly ever talked about when mentioning Cruise but it’s one of his best.

Last Samurai was one of the last great epics ever made. It's a shame that they don't make movies like this any more

I think it works best because it isn't fully a noble savage situation, and they lose decisively by the end.
The theme is that there are aspects of their culture that are superior, but it's dying for a reason.
I still think the end scene is cringe though.
