Writers for Star Wars movies, books, and comics never really dealt too much with relativistic weapons before.
We knew suns planetoids nd debris could frick things like the Falcon.
The Imperials were not fond of putting even capital ships into asteroid fields and only a threat like Vader behind them made them dive in.
Maybe it is just a gentlemen's agreement of you don't use this one and done ram. Unless you're Vader then you go into asteroid fields and come out hyperspace ramming. Because you're a fricking boss.

They were fricked no matter.
He was right in eliminating the dreadnought, it just cost too much to resist after. But still it was his call for that mission and even though it was bad luck in the bomber going like a claymore. The buck stopped at him.

Leia admonished Poe too (and first) but was quick to order a scramble of the fighters to cover the retreat. Ben just put it in a little deeper before they could.
Holdo's resources at that point we're 400ish standing. Unarmed and unshielded shuttles. And 3 ships running out of fuel.
What can you do with that?

The First Order knew exactly what ships were present. There was no frigate that fought like a calamarian cruiser moment here. There was just run and hope the plan work. It didn't then Chewie and Rey and Luke came in and did their rebel stuff to save the day.

The scene clearly showed him AT the cannon. He would have made it.
The problem is what does she expect Finn to do AFTER she crashes into him in front of the entire First Order after watching them kill every other person but Poe?
