How did this movie make you feel the 1st time watching it?
I 1st watched it at a point in my childhood when I had not yet experienced the gut punch this movie can make you feel. I will always remember the feelings that I had seeing Luke get his arse handed to him by Vader. His arm being cut off and him giving up and trying to kill himself. The betrayal by Lando and Han getting frozen.
It was just a shock to my system at the time, but it made me love this movie and made me always yearn for the next movie to make me feel the same. It will always rank near the top for one of the best movies of all time and one of my favorites also.

I was too young to get it when I first saw it as a kid. By the time I was old enough to understand the gravity of what was happening, everything unexpected had been spoiled for me.
Imagine you’ve never heard of Game of Thrones and the first episode you see is Ned Stark losing his head.
Now, imagine you’ve never seen Game of Thrones, but you’ve seen nearly a decade’s worth of memes spoiling every major plot point. Ned Stark losing his head wouldn’t be shocking.

Me too. It was my least favorite of the three because it has very little action after Hoth. I would fast forward through the Dagobah stuff because I thought it was boring as a kid.

I don't have a memory that goes back of not knowing this movie, I was probably too young to understand everything going on the first time I saw it.

This actually was the very first episode I saw. Heard enough about the show to give it a shot and bang - main characters head was removed. So, I appreciate the analogy. I do not remember the first time I saw Empire Strikes Back (just too young when I saw it first and kind of knew the story after that), but I will never forget that first episode of GoT.

Saw it in the theater in 1980 as an 8 year old. Initially didn't like it as much as Star Wars. Over the years it's become maybe my favorite movie of all time. It was just done right and holds up very well.

Same, as a kid I was too dumb to understand how good it was. Return of the Jedi was my favorite, probably because of the action scenes.
As an adult, empire is such a good movie. It's without a doubt the best star wars movie from an acting, writing and directing standpoint.

Same. Empire was my least favorite of the three. It didn’t jump the other two until I was in hs. Rewatching ROTJ as an adult, it really does look like a noticeable decline in quality post empire.

I was 19 when it first came out, having seen the first movie 5-6 times in the theater already, so I was pumped for it - and yet it actually exceeded my expectations.
I can’t imagine going into the franchise not knowing anything about the plot and characters, and watching the prequels before seeing the original two films. It would completely destroy the experience.

The sequence where the Millennium Falcon navigates the asteroid field is one of my all time favorites. The score and visuals are fantastic. From that point on I wanted to be Han Solo.

As many have posted to young to realize the full impact, but it did leave me full of anticipation for the next movie. Jedi couldn't come quick enough.

Saw it as a kid in the theater. All of Hoth was mind blowing.
I remember being disappointed as a kid that it didn't have a triumphant ending. I don't feel like a lot of movies left you in as much of a limbo state, with Luke's hand whacked off and Han Solo's fate uncertain.
Pretty bold move, especially at the time.
The Fellowship of the Ring ended on a mixed note, with Boormir dead and the fellowship split up, but it was still more of a positive note. The 2nd movie ended with a rousing victory at Helm's deep.

Jipped, because it left us all hanging. People claiming that it's the best of the three is a fairly recent development. It's a good movie, but it has some corny dialogue and again, its story isn't resolved. That was great for getting people to stand in line for Jedi in droves never before seen (lines wrapped multiple times around theaters) but it didn't do it any favors as far as being a stand alone movie. 3rd best Star Wars movie, though.

Saw it at Bon Marche Mall as a kid. Oh, the good old days.

Yes, I remember my young self staring in awe at the majesty of the AT-AT attack. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
That said, it really left little kids empty. The cutting into the carcass of the Tauntaun in order to save Luke was somewhat traumatizing, though I assumed they knew what they were doing. Then to have Han embedded in carbonite with that appearance was unsettling. That's just how I remember it.

If you consider late 80's recent. Everyone I knew or heard talk about it, thought ESB was the superior movie by then. MTV had it being considered for movie of the decade.

quote:bullshite, and I can prove it. In the movie High Fidelity, a film made by hipster Gen X people for hipster Gen X people, there's a scene in which the characters are all sitting around listing things. One of them suggests "sequels that were better than the original." Not one of them names Empire. If it was such a common opinion, as you say, it would have at least been mentioned. Anyway, I was 9 when Empire came out and I went all the way through the 80's without hearing a single person claim it was better than the original.

So yeah, bullshite.

So you're proof is a clip from High Fidelity? I'm the same age as you. It was my older brothers favorite movie back when I was in High School. Some would argue that New Hope was better(understandable), but I don't remember anyone thinking ROJ was the best movie. Maybe you grew up in an area with a toxic water supply.
