the ecomonics of these "flip & move" shows dont make sense
been flat out with the flu and i watched a bunch of these shows for the first time. clearly the narrative of the shows is manufactured for the camera, but assuming the expenses they reveal are accurate, the math doesn't add up

for example, on a 1000SF house:

-they seem to pay about the same, about $1/SF at auction
-it seems to average about $10/SF to move it
-demo varies but an average seems to be about $2/SF

so now you are 12- 13/SF into a 1000SF house, which still may need a new roof, etc. you can frame up a brand new 1000SF house, blacked in (sheathing/ext wrap/etc) for $15/SF or so, and you then have cost certainty to that point, and have a new template to work off of for finishes. why in the world does it make sense to risk money (especially the moving expense) on an old house when you can build a new one for the same or similar?

what am i missing?

2 things:

1. most of the shite they get is donated or massively discounted for advertising.

2. Shows like extreme home makeover are about how awesome Sears is!!! And how much Sears products save people's lives!!! And it's about caring... and Sears!

what does that have to do with the upfront and moving costs?

yep. its laughable some of the quotes they get for redoing bathrooms and kitchens.

those quotes wont even cover the labor in the real world.

probably so, but again, has nothing to do with the expense of getting to a framed and blacked in house

Honestly, if they had a show about designing and building custom houses of all sizes from the ground up, I would watch the frick out of it.

Yeah, a friend is an actual builder who did a home renovation for a TV show. He did 99.9% of the work with his crew, the "stars" of the show would show up occasionally to pick up a tool and act like they were using it. My friend got his face in the show on rare occasions as part of the help. The whole thing was a cluster - the furniture showed up early in the build and kitchen/bathroom fixtures came very late. Getting paid was an ordeal. After the build was over they tried to hire him to come back and make some repairs since a hurricane did a fair bit of damage (mostly dock and landscaping), he told them to fack off. He'd been excited to do it and would never do it again.

It was expensive as hell because of dumb decisions and there are "artistic" features that no sane person would want. A year later the winners of the house are still trying to unload it. I'm sure the taxes on their winnings were really high. It was fun to see some of the reality behind reality TV.
