For past couple months I have been watching movies on Criterion, many of them foreign films for first time. There are so many great foreign films never seen by many in U.S. because they are not in English, and most distribution houses in past never showed them to mass public because of the language, and also if they did they would be dubbed which ruins the movie, much better to read the sub titles, but then that is a turn off for some. But after watching over a dozen french, Italian, Russian, Japanese films I have gradually accepted sub titles to point where they are no longer noticeable as I get absorbed into a good movie; it's the visuals and cadence of the actual voice that propels, and you quickly get used to fast reading the captions. $11/mo.

There are some pretty good Russian World War II movies made in the last 10-15 years no one in the west knows about. God damn the Eastern Front was brutal.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out. I watch all of the Studio Ghibli movies in the original with subtitles. You really do get to where you don’t notive that you are reading them.

I'm already using closed caption to understand BBC dramas and most mumbly-arse American shows.

The big difference with watching a foreign film is you really have to pay attention. We loved both seasons of "My Brilliant Friend" on HBO, but we could not watch more than 1 or 2 episodes at a time because of the focus required. Worn out.

If we had just fired up Ghostbusters 8 or Return of Shawshank, we could fiddle around on the ipad and keep up with the movie while half listening.

LOL, same here on lots of u.s. movies, I have to constantly rewind to understand what was said, sometimes 3 or 4, then give up and turn on captions.

I pretty much leave subtitles on when watching Prime. I started doing it with foreign films, left it on during something British, and started leaving it on most of the time.

The only time it sucks is when a movie has English and another language, and you get (speaking French) over where the show is doing their own subtitles. I also wish they wouldn't tell me (dramatic, or ominous Music) is playing.

Agreed, although to be fair CC is made for people who can't hear shite.

I use subtitles more now and it is still pretty distracting for me. I am used to it, but I find at times I am reading dialogue and missing what is happening onscreen. All in all though, subtitles don't bother me too badly. I imagine it's tougher if the movie is literally in another language though, as it would require more concentration on reading. When it's in English, what I hear is basically reiterating what I just read. If that makes sense.

(A dog barks in the distance)

That one always makes me chuckle. If you also hear someone's baby cry, better watch out for the Night Prowler.

I loved "And God Created Woman," the breakout film for Brigitte Bardot. Had always thought she was a no talent blonde bombshell, like a Monroe or Mansfield. But she is not only the hottest, but real talent, very funny, can dance (trained ballerina). A delightful film.

Any Ingmar Bergman film is great, but his most critical acclaimed I've seen on Criterion: Personna, Seventh Seal, Fanny & Alexander, Summer with Monica (sexual heat that only Bergman could create, way ahead of its time). Fanny & Alexander arguably one of all time greatest jobs by a cinematographer (won Academy Award that year) and set designer.

Science fiction masterpiece "The Stalker" by Tarkovksy rocks.

Japense horror/drama film "Onibabba" a truly scary and superb thriller.

"Grand Prix" starring James Garner has been called the greatest car race movie ever, and I can't argue, but I think it's been bumped to make way for new round of rotations. Can't believe I never saw it when it came out decades ago...it's in English btw.

And others, but those above first came to mind and for me were all totally enjoyable. So many more to explore.

All great options you mentioned. Grand Prix left the service August 1st, which is a bummer.

Strong disagree with that Monroe dig. Unfortunately, none of her best performances are on Criterion Channel, and none of Niagara, The Misfits, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are currently available for free or with a subscription. But those are three very good leading performances.

Fair enough. I admit to not having seen the Misfits, I tbink her last film and with Gable? I admit I did enjoy her in Some Like it Hot. I guess Bardot is too fresh on mind:)
