The Confession Killer

Netflix is nailing the documentary market right now on the legal system.
Actually more compelling than Making a Murderer.
Once again takes aim at the legal system, corrupt cops, and lack of common sense...at every political level all to save face.
Think The Thin Blue Line Texas Ranger style. There's no doubt this scumbag was guilty of some murders but the doc involves revenge on the DA by the Texas Rangers, shotty police work just to clear cases and FBI pressure on lawyers to testify against the D.A.
I hope next that Netflix does a documentary on our 20th Century version of the Salem Witch Trials - the McMartin Preschool Trial that was the longest and costliest trial in American history and the most absurd.

Was solid. Finished all of it in one viewing.

There had to be more to the “orange socks” trial than what was presented in the doc for a jury to convict, because simply based on what was presented to the viewer I don’t know how a juror could determine he wasn’t in Florida...No matter how much Lucas was sabotaging his own defense.
Would also love to know More details of the Scotty Scott Case in Arkansas.

I’m still not convinced that modern day Vic is in fact the real Vic. He looks nothing like his former self.

He looks like he weighs 120 lbs. I'd like to know what he eventually recovered in his defamation case... and how he spent it.

I like how the show evolved.
Each episode had a new angle.

Like the D.A. angle and the Rangers and FBI going after him for questioning these cases...and especially...
The girlfriend of Lucas he supposedly killed and confessed to killing her but she was still alive and the Rangers never bothered to find that fact out.
She read about her murder in the newspaper or something.

I was trying to find similarities to his younger self as I watched the show. I concluded he lost a lot of weight, went gray and got old. But wow, he looks nothing like he did when he was young.

Just finished it. Really solid documentary. I remembered the news stories but not the details. Mind blowing how off base that whole thing got.

I think the journalist that brought the Japanese guys for an interview was the smartest dude (along with Vic). The part where they charted he supposedly would have had to travel 11000 miles in a few weeks was golden
Man it would be frustrating to be one of those families and taken on a ride by everyone involved
ETA: I've noticed it seemed way more people in the past went by 3 names. What's the deal with that? Some old farts wanna chime in on that? Doesn't matter what true crime doc you watch from a few decades ago at least 5 people involved have the middle name "Lee" or "Sue" or "Bubba" or some crap

That was the scary part. Are these Rangers morons, just not doing basic work to connect the dots or just want to get rid of these cases.
The family of one of the murdered he confessed to had to do their own sleuthing to tell the Rangers, uh, this is impossible.
And the Rangers said, oh well...he loved driving. He was a loner. What?
The map of confessions was drive 1,000 miles, kill someone, then turn around and drive 1,000 miles don't eat or sleep, kill someone, then turn around and drive back 500 miles kill someone, then turnaround and drive...etc.
And then when he tells the Japanese dude, I killed some people in your country too and he says, how did you get there and he says...I drove.
Also most people weren't normally 3 names.
But in popular culture, once you were a serial killer, you got 3 names. You know, I guess, to differentiate you from all the other Henry Lucas or John Gacy.
I think Seinfeld did a bit on this with Joel Rifken.

My wife tried to suggest giving our son the middle name Lee because hers is Leigh. I told her absolutely not. Might as well put a bullseye on your back that you are a stone cold killer.

Well he was already on record as saying he forged those records in Florida. So the jury just thought he either was trying to save his arse from the death penalty, or he wanted the death penalty so why not give it to him.
They also thought he had murdered 100s of others as well so they were like sure they tied him up.

In 1984, a serial killer on death row in Texas confessed to Thornton’s murder. Based on that confession, a Pulaski County Circuit Court judge granted Scott a new trial in August 1984. Scott’s retrial was delayed for three years because of his health problems. During the delay, the serial killer recanted his confession, and an investigation revealed that he was in Florida at the time of the crime.
Scott’s third trial was held in May 1989. At that trial, the eye witness who had identified Scott and said he stood eye to eye with the killer was shown that the killer was standing on a platform about 9 inches higher than where the witness was standing. The witness realized that Scott could not have been the killer because he and Scott were the same height--if Scott had been on the platform, they would not have been standing eye to eye. On May 12, 1989, a jury acquitted him of all charges. Scott was not compensated in any fashion.
Scott might have libel case here the way the doc presented the case. Their actual point wasn’t tied to whether he was actually guilty or not but they left it so open ended you just assume he had clearly done it

Btw that guy has seen some shite. He witnessed the JFK shooting and the Jack Ruby shooting in person as well as spent time with Bundy
