A few days ago, I watched it for the first time since my childhood. What a beautiful movie it is.

The shipwreck scene is fantastic; full of frenetic energy, terror, desperation, confusion. It was really well done especially considering the time of production and lack of cgi.

Alec was portrayed very well. The story was very well developed and executed regarding the boy and the horse. I loved how the scene took around 20 minutes to show how the horse finally ate from Alec’s hand, the back and forth leading up to that moment.

Mickey Rooney was brilliant. And I thought the movie captured the time period very well. Above all, the love felt between the boy and his horse is wholly conveyed to the viewer with the utmost feeling.

I haven't seen it in years, but as I recall the first half of the movie was great. Second half - meh.

Didn't Coppola have a hand in the film, either as a producer or something.

I agree on Rooney, I think it's his best part ever. No over the topness, just subtlety and someome who is the actual size of a jockey.

It's a great movie.

Yes, Francis was the producer and his father Carmine wrote the score.

He used that National Velvet experience well for this role.

In this modern age of shoving the story in the audience's face and having the plot blaze along like a 100m dash for 2 hours, it's nice to go back and watch some movies that spend a good big of time developing the characters and emotional connection.

A child being conveyed as a child. Quiet, courage, wanting to bond with the hrose after the incident.
Likewise, the horse needing help and slowly growing to trust the kid.
You just can't beat a good ole wholesome movie.

I popped up on the Criterion Channel, so I gave it a go with the kids. My son was completely engaged for the first half of the film. That one hour section without any dialogue? You could have dropped a bomb and it wouldn't have distracted him.

The second more traditional half of the film? He kind of lost interest. Really weird the "hard" part was the one he loved
