I watched a video a couple of hours before the Oscars that almost made me change my pick for Best Picture from 1917 to Parasite but decided against it. This guy predicted Parasite to win using statistics:

I agree mostly with you. Except it wasn’t a great movie. It was just a good one.

I'd be curious to see in which order everyone saw the nominated films. Parasite was the most recent one for me, so I still have a high from it. Not sure how I'll feel about it in six months.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Joker are still top notch for me, even though it's been months since I've seen either.

Parasite was incredible to me because of the cinematography and the acting.

The way it looked was outstanding. I thought the Kim dad and Kim daughter stole the movie. They should of been nominated, especially the Kim dad.

Clay Travis brought up an interesting question (and he's seen the movie by the way). If Parasite had been an English language film with white actors in the roles, would it have won Best Picture last night?

same director and cinematographer? Maybe.

If its just an American version no.

The movie was phenomenal to me because of Bong Joon-Ho and the specific actors involved, not because of its message.

I didn't like Parasite quite as much as everyone else did. Hell, it wasn't even my favorite foreign language film of the year, The Farewell was. And if we're going for arthouse horror, I preferred Midsommar.

That said, I was so happy that it won. There was a real genuine outpouring of affection for the movie and it's nice to experience that. It was a great, deep year for movies and it seemed there were several polarizing films, but everyone liked Parasite. They don't reveal the voting, but I bet it won due to the ranked choice ballots. I'm guessing it wasn't the most people's top choice, but it was top 3 for virtually everybody.

As CB already said, with Bong in command, likely yes. This resonated with people because of its thematic content and the superb execution. Very few English directors can turn a film on a genre dime the way Bong can. Most movies with mid-movie genre changes fall flat. This one didn't. Who else can do that? Who else could have balanced the tones in a monster movie like The Host? This is filmmaking in a style that masters like Spielberg and Scorsese haven't attempted (no, in not saying Bong is a better director than Scorsese).

Also, eff Clay Travis for idiotic baiting on a Best Picture win. Is he so afraid that English, white movies will never win again? Moonlight and Parasite are two recent outliers in a see of "traditional" fare. We'll be fine.
