Starship Troopers - The Bugs Shooting at spaceships from the planet surface

don't know how this slipped my memory from seeing this movie years ago, but the Bugs shoot "plasma?" out of their butts from the surface of the planet at space ships miles above, in outer space.
I love how ridiculous that is, moves the movie up a couple of pegs in my book.
Really wish I was present when the director or producer or writer or whoever was selling this script to get it green lit.

what about the shower scene?

Yeah, it ruins the gritty reality of the other scenes.

Buenos Aires was an inside job!

I like that he went with a Tyranids organic weaponry theme for the Bugs instead of giving them near the same tech as humans like in the book.
Made them more monstrous.
Spiders with rifles would be pure Verhoeven though

Yeah, tough to sell a classic science fiction novel written by one of the most famous science fiction authors of all time.

The themes of this story go far deeper than you seem to realize. I suggest you do a little research.

Its a big leap from science fiction novel audience to general movie going audience. also we're not talking your typical science fiction either, that general audiences have seen and embraced. Such as the Alien franchise, or Close Encounters, or even Total Recall. We're talking "that's one smart bug" and bugs shooting plasma missiles out of their asses and a human using telekinetic powers get information out of the smart bug. Not your everyday sci fi being turned into a big budget production, more in line with a B film.
I don't know the history of getting this movie green lit, but I've got to imagine at least a couple of studios laughed them out of the meeting.

Drastic understatement. The movie was a mindless action flick. The book was brilliant.

But is it?

I get it, its a Third Reich propaganda film, satirizing extreme militarism. Also, imagine selling that to, and I'm going to generalize a bunch here, a bunch of Jewish Studio execs.
Most of your movie goers aren't catching that
ETA: Personally, I'm watching this as just a fun movie. Which it is a very fun movie, that so happens to have a deeper message. Why cant we just watch movies to enjoy them and not think too much?

It's biological weaponry.
We don't know that it's "plasma", only that it glows and is highly destructive, and they can shoot it.
Look at what insects and other such critters CAN do. A fire ant vs a human is on the line of a Godzilla scale, and yet a single fire ant can inflict some serious pain with one bite/sting. Get into various wasps and that goes up in scale. Certain spiders and other such creatures can take down a human. Fireflies glow. Some insects (stink bugs) can produce noxious sprays that can blind or disable a person temporarily.
With all our tech, we're still struggling to produce something along the lines of silk, when it comes to strength.
Now talk about giving that group of creatures intelligence (the brain bugs), with the intent and ability to bio-engineer.

I love how we are all stuck on the fact that bugs shat something to outer space but are neglecting the fact that Doogie Howzer is telepathic...

There are a few things I thank God for in my prayers every night.
One of those is that bugs aren’t any bigger than they are.

Seeing this thread got me to rewatch the movie tonight. I love this movie in spite of its ridiculousness.
