Stargirl - Now on DC Universe - on CW May 19th
Very good start. 80’s kids movie/90’s superhero movie vibe. The high school stuff is cliche and corny, but the superhero and family stuff is good. Not your usual CW teen angst series. Something for families with kids.

Surprised at how spot-on the JSA stuff was.

Stargirl. JSA is in the opening sequence. The legacy characters appear later in the season.

***SPOILERS ABOUND*** It's only 1 episode at this point, so it's not much to spoil.

Agreed. While I hate the signaling a lot of these shows do with clothing colors (for example, Pat is always wearing something with red stripes, Courtney is always wearing blue and/or white), it's not annoying yet (looking at you, Smallville... every damned season of you).

I like that the mother and Courtney look similar enough to pass as mother and daughter. Having parents and children looking vastly different with no explanation (adopted, for example) pulls me out of the story.

Everyone did a great job in their parts. I agree on the cheesy high school schtick but if that's the only bad writing, I can live with it.

The opening scenes were probably the best of any of the DC live action shows, I would even put it above Arrow's opening scenes.

What we see from it is that Sandman, Starman, Doctor Midnight, Wildcat, Hourman and Flash are all defeated/killed. That leaves Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Johnny Thunder/Yz, Doctor Fate and Green Lantern (Allen Scott) unseen (although the green flames everywhere could be seen as Allen Scott's presence).

I liked that they showed at least another member of the JSA fighting well (Hourman) instead of just making Starman the lone ass-kicker of the scene. I would have liked more of this fight but what we got was excellent.

The promo poster has her friends from the "losers' table" as being the new Doctor Midnight, Hourman and Wildcat (not sure I'm thrilled with that rather than they take on new identities, but we'll see how it plays out).

Courtney's training went a bit fast. I know she's a gymnast and the boxing gloves signify some possible self-defense training but I would like to see a few more episodes before she's comfy riding around on the staff hundreds of feet up. This is common though and it wasn't nearly enough for her to do much against an actual villain.

The shout-out to Action Comics (the moving van) was a nice touch.

Solid first episode, here's hoping it continues at this level.

PC-phobia aside, I love that they go through the history of the Star Spangled Kid and Stipesy, to Syl getting the Cosmic Staff/Rod and becoming Starman. It would be great if they'd go back and show the original Starman passing the torch to him as they did in the comics. I don't blame them for bypassing the Skyman name. I never liked that moniker.

They might be saving that for later in the season or for another storyline as part of another season. That they actually went with the Star-Spangled Kid tells me nothing is off-limits (otherwise they could have just left that part out completely).

How have people seen this already? I think it premieres tonight.

Is she on the Arrowverse earth? The JSA has been on LoT but I don’t know if it’s the same cast or not. Plus her earth got destroyed in Crisis but Oliver might have restored it

It's on the DC Universe app a day or two before it appears on CW. Then the day after it's on the CW, it'll be on their app as well. It's the first DC Universe show to do that.

It's not in the Arrowverse because the JSA in Legends of Tomorrow was a 1940's team, the JSA in Stargirl was apparently active in the 90's and early 2000's.

E2 is out.

SPOILERS ABOUND

Pat lists off more JSA members who are gone (still no mention of Fate's... uhm... fate). A good Pat-training montage. Fun with Brainwave. Another Grundy shot. Pat's turn at being called a sidekick again was a great underscoring for the character's reluctance. Solid fight scene with Brainwave. I like that both Pat and Courtney are still struggling with their newfound roles instead of them being montaged into having expert control (I could use a little more Courtney training as I think they are using her acrobatics a little too liberally this early).

Eventually they are going to have to explain to the mom what's going on.

All in all, another solid episode.

I thought that was a solid 2nd episode.

Spoilers:

Glad to see that this won't turn out to be an entire season of Courtney vs Brainwave. I think that the CW shows do themselves a disservice when they drag out half a season around one main villain.

The STRIPE CGI is a bit cheesy, but it fits pretty well with the tone of the series. That first shot of STRIPE putting its hand out for Courtney to climb aboard gave me some amazing Gigantor and Iron Giant feels.

It's a broad-appeal show so it will most likely have some silly moments in each episode (like in E2 when Pat is practicing with his rocket-fist).

Three episodes in. Even as a kids' show, the acting and production value is above par for CW (this was created as a streaming series, I know).

The shots of S.T.R.I.P.E. in action are still cartoonish, but it fits the kid show aspect.

Johns has them paying huge respect to the JSA. Other than Sylvester Pemberton's inclusion as a member, they're hitting every stitch of every costume and every weapon and gizmo to perfection.

Where do you think they are going with the Barbara and Jordan,(Icicle), angle? I hope its not some him trying to seduce her thing, would kinda be opposite of the vibe of the show.

I also think the Wizards wife is gonna play a bigger role than we all were originally expecting

Not sure how long Icicle will be around. They're running through villains pretty quickly. But if he seduces her it'll be through business. Getting her to focus on his goals instead of being with her family.

Yeah, she seemed to be more than a background character.
