Paramount has just announced newly postponed release dates for a trio of big franchise films which are all staying in 2020:

#Spongebob: MAY 22 --> JUL 31
#AQuietPlace2: UNSET --> SEP 4
#TopGun Maverick: JUN 24 --> DEC 23

The studio’s summer tentpoles, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and the Marvel film “Morbius,” have been moved from this July to March 2021, with “Ghostbusters” set for March 5 and “Morbius” set for March 19. In addition, Sony’s adaptation of the Playstation series “Uncharted” starring Tom Holland and Antonio Banderas has been moved from March 2021 to October 8, 2021.

In addition, two projects have been removed from Sony’s slate: the Tom Hanks WWII film “Greyhound,” which was previously scheduled for release in June, and an untitled Marvel film which held the October 2021 release slot now being used for “Uncharted.”

The rest of Hollywood’s studios are likely to make similar, sweeping changes to their tentpole release strategies in the coming weeks and months as the film industry tries to adjust to a world in which movie theaters worldwide have been indefinitely closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

There were people who thought studios were content to just drop their stuff on VOD instead of pushing it back, and I laughed. Ghostbusters is going to make bank. You don’t drop something like that on VOD, not even if you charge $50 for it.

Fall and winter are gonna be loaded with big releases if this keeps up. We're gonna have two or three big movies a week.
