Awful movie.

I thought they did a great job with the nominations. There were a few independent films that I saw last year though that were oscar worthy though.

yeah my wife and I have been watching independent movies (even though they're more expensive on iTunes) and we've seen a handful that were better than grand Budapest hotel (and my wife loves WA), that movie just sucked

it was weird for the sake of being weird. The performances weren't special. The costume design Oscar was well deserved.

1. Don't run it against the most popular show on television.

I agree with the entirety of your post, with the exception of this one comment.

if you're on network television and lose to cable, it doesn't matter what show is on cable, you fricking suck.

I think network tv execs have become too comfy so they don't even try.

it's a more than valid point, but with DVR options and the fact that more people watch all the movies of 2014 than watch the walking dead, what's the excuse

network tv, Hollywood, movies...you'd think with even a modicum of effort, they should beat any cable show

he deserved the Oscar, it shouldn't have been a competition

but they gave it to him for the wrong reason.

In terms of quality, network tv has been choking on cable's dick for years now.

To each their own. I thought GBH was a top 5 movie last year. Planet of the apes bored my to tears with its predictable, dragging on plot. There was nothing original about it and it felt like something that could've been condensed into about a 30 minute film.

Eta: My main issue with the oscars was how long it was, and the few winners that had to push their agenda. Like you pointed out

Take Pirates of the Caribbean. That's an example of what you're calling "wal mart crowd movies". Johnny Depp was excellent, and got nominated for best actor. He didn't have to die, and he wasn't better than Ledger

This is just my opinion, but I think the political stuff needs to be cut down. Nearly every single winner gets up there and cries about something. I don't care if they are right or wrong but it turns people off. Movies are entertainment to us, not the public face of some cultural movement. Sunday night wasn't as bad as it has been in the past, but people don't want to turn in and be preached to about unjustices. Again, movies are meant to be an escape and having super rich actors stand up and potificate is not what people want to see.

Also, don't discount the fact that the Oscars is now the culmination of a series of multiple award shows. People get tired of seeing rich celebrities pat themselves on the back over and over again.

If the Oscars is truly a celebration of movies, then make it one instead a celebration of celebrity or political agendas. If they had more Lady Gaga/Sound of Music and less Patricia Arquette, then they'd see their ratings go up. Hell, come up with some new awards like best comedic performance or something.

I joked on Sunday night that if I had won I would have gone a rant about how we needed to do continue efforts to control the weather so that Oscar night does not get rained on.

just to have some fun with all of the BS they spew out there.

of course if I was big in Hollywood I am sure I would get wrapped up in their BS and become one of them.

I want to go to Hollywood and become a famous actor and win an Oscar for the SOLE PURPOSE of giving every single one of these vapid, soulless fricks a tongue-lashing for pushing political agendas at a goddamn awards show that is meant to celebrate the achievements of their work, not the women's suffering or the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

That would be my soapbox that I hop onto.

Haha...I would love to see one actor stand up there and do that. Just imagine if you won some top award in your industry and you go up on stage and spend more time on your speech preaching about political stuff instead of thanking your friends, families, co-workers, etc? It wouldn't even pass through my mind nor would I think that notion would go through most normal people's minds. If people in my industry awarded me a top honor on an international stage, I would be humble and pontificating or wagging my finger at someone would be the last thing I would want to do...but maybe that's just me.
