Snowpiercer season 2 *AND 3* discussion thread

Who’s with me?
Not a very good show overall, but one that’s pretty damn entertaining anyway. Interested in seeing what they do with this new train and Wilford.
Is anybody still watching? I know there weren’t many around here last season. But maybe the show picked up a few new watchers in the meantime.
We can make this the season discussion thread if y’all want.
ETA: Season 3 discussion begins on page 8.

Saw a commercial for this. What is this about?

I just watched the first season last week while quarantined. Is this based on the same stuff as the movie?
Posted on 1/25/21 at 9:19 pm to CocomoLSU
It's been a little too long for me, I got about 5 min in tonite and realized I forgot some key details
I just brushed up on some recaps from YT and now skipping thru the last episode of last season to refresh my memory
Looking forward to season 2 premiere either later tonite or tomorrow
Im down for that

Roommate put this on because he watched the first season. Seen the movie but none of the first season. He filled me in on details, I’ll be in here. Also Daveed can’t hear anything but Thomas Jefferson when he talks but glad he’s getting some roles.

That would be my concern. Hadn't seen Hamilton when his arc on Blackish was going, so it wasn't a problem at the time. Now it absolutely is.

It gives much more backstory and present political turmoil and strife amongst the sections.
Sorry for being vague, I hate spoilers.

Possible spoilers:
Due to the season 2 trailer after the episode ended. Melanie will leave the train with a sled of stuff. I think she is trying to find a command center or something like that. Some type of Scientific lab where they can monitor the earth in the snow and temperature. That’s why they kept showing the weather ballons.
Also Wilfred big frost giant is nuts

What happened to the kid?
He was the new "engineer" in training, finds out about his surrogate mom, Layton establishes authority....
Season 2 - kid is gone. Seemed like he was to be a focal point of the overall arc, and now *poof*

Spoiler free synopsis for those asking, it's a show similar to the movie (which is awesome). It's not overly great, but pretty damn entertaining though. And there is enough shite to keep/maintain your interest so far.
There's a train (1,000 cars long) with different classes of people. These are the only people left on earth, and the train travels the world (which is frozen) and they count the rotations. Murders, class struggle, etc. Without spoiling, just know that all kinds of shenanigans occur.
Season one was pretty solid, and I am looking forward to season two. I hope to watch the first one this evening.

Okay, I watched it last night. Decent first episode, although it almost felt like they tried to cram too much into it.
Refresh my memory. So at the end of last season, the tailie kid (forget his name) was brought to the Engine car to learn all that shite and help run the train. Like someone said, he was nonexistent in this episode, but he may still be there. Wilford is hiding on a separate track, and he jumps in behind SP and latches onto it from the back. Also, Mel's daughter is alive and is basically Wilford's #2. And the tailies mutiny works and they basically win the little war and "take over" the train and make everything equal and a democracy. Is that about right for S1? I don't remember why Mel went outside, and I don't remember what happened with them letting loose the six cars (I may have to read up on that...or is there a good summary video of S1 out there to watch? It's crazy how much shite I DON'T remember from S1).
So S2 we have Mel outside trying to break the connection with Wilford's train (not sure how she thought she would accomplish that with just a tiny axe, but whatevs). She also places a bomb on the....latching mechanism?
The people on SP seem to be okay with what happened, although we don't see any of the elite passengers yet. Layton and his knocked up part-time ole lady get upgraded massively into a badass suite. And all I could think of was "what an incredible waste of space." I'm sure that won't sit well with the people still in the tail who have to put their lives on the line to defend the train.
Wilford has a plan to basically take over SP and threatens to anchor it whenever he doesn't get his way. Aren't there parts of the track where they have to be going a certain minimum speed to make it through different areas? I seem to remember that from last season. Also, I assume SP has to be running to generate power? Oh, and Wilford has a giant dude who's unbothered by the extreme cold that can beat everyone's arse.
Alex (Mel's daughter) is super anti Mel, but then also not? And she is a slave for Wilford, but then also not too? That is a little odd. Like she locks up Mel, but then also visits her and is interested in what she has to say. I know Alex does make the decision to activate the latches, which causes the explosion and attaches the trains permanently, but she struggled with that.
The attempt to break through and board Wilford's train seemed pretty rushed and forced. Stupid move IMO, and they didn't get anywhere and had to retreat with casualties. Good job, Layton.
There were more things they crammed into this episode, but I am forgetting them currently.

IMDB has him capped at last season's 8 episodes. The rest of the returning cast shows 15, 18, 20 episodes. I'm guessing he's off the show for some reason. You would think they recast the actor (if there was some offscreen issue) - they spent way too much time on that story arc to just make it vanish IMO.
quote:
I don't remember why Mel went outside,
SP had just been captured by Big Alice, & she jumped ontop the moving train(s) to try and disconnect the data feed/arm hacking module thingy. As she was Super Mario Bros hopping her way down train, Wilford slammed on the brakes and she went flying off.
quote:
I don't remember what happened with them letting loose the six cars
The elites figured out Mel was faking the whole Wilford thing, and arrested her for treason. With help, she escaped and plotted to help Layton with his revolution. They intentionally funnelled the elites that were trying to mutiny along with the stormtroopers into a section of the train, disconnected those specific 6 cars, sent them off on a spur track to die, then reconnected the train. You may remember part of that section had a bunch of Taillies locked in chains and Layton couldnt free them, so they were sacrificed with the rest.
quote:

Mel knew that Wilford could bring SP to a halt, detach and then hit the reverse button. She placed that bomb to ensure their fates are tied. She's supa-dupa smart, and always one step ahead apparently.

remember: the trouble makers were in that 6 cars detachment and left for dead

I think this will be the catalyst for a huge anti-Layton story arc. That insufferable bitch that took over Hospitality after Mel is going to try and light that fire.

yep, but that bomb changed the game - now they're stuck together like Human Centipede

yes and yes - I think it's more about particular bridges, and certain turns with snow drift. I guess on straightaways its OK ??

Those 2 doctors are not right in the head. I guess this is SP version of GOT's zombie Mountain

I think shes just not a very good actress, and just makes her character confusing.

Yeah, I sort of remember that. I knew that it wasn't the tail they cut off and that it was middle cars, just couldn't remember why. I need to try to find a synopsis video.

Not even a little bit...they are loons. And that will come into play. I wonder how many people are actually on Alice. Someone said there was maybe room for upwards of 100 or so, but guessed that there were about 40 I believe.

Good episode.
They do a good job with the 4 way chess between Wilford, Melanie, Layton and Alex. And, Melanie is 3 steps ahead of all of them. I still think during the prisoner exchange, Alex handed something to Melanie we didnt see on camera. The mozeltof with the snow sample vile was just for show.
I guess Wilford is a full blown psychopath, and a bit of a pothead. Makes Melanie's actions seem more justified. Didnt expect to see Josie again, makes the mysterious missing Miles seem even more perplexing, and more difficult to explain.
Prediction: there's a surprise space colony in orbit, and those fancy weather balloons are going to start a new story arc.
ETA: I now also think Melanie knew 110% that once she proposed the manning of the Denver(?) Research Station, she was the best candidate to go, and Wilford would immediately suggest her (even though she acted a bit surprised). She's trying to get off the train with her daughter on purpose.
that makes 2 of us

Responding to some of Stu’s points in the other thread. Wilford is clearly a psycho. That whole deal with Kevin was just weird as frick. I get him questioning what he learned, and what he told them. I even understand calling him on giving them too much information. If I stretch it I can even get onboard with making him kill himself if there was some previously agreed to terms of that being the consequence for betraying the train. But making him get naked in a tub in front of you, and then getting naked and jumping in with him, all so he can slit his wrist and die while you not only soak in his blood, but your dog drinks it too...I’m not onboard with all that. And it makes very little sense.
I hope Alex gave something to Melanie during the prisoner exchange, because otherwise that whole scene was just completely stupid. So Alex tries to give her the sample, only to change her mind and crush it when Melanie says “come with me”? Stupid. I hope they revisit that and show that she’s trying to earn points with Wilford.
Josie being alive is sort of bullshite too. I didn’t remember what happened after she and Melanie fought and she turned the whole room cold, but her wiki fan page said that her “corpse was fed into the train’s compost system.” So it’s complete bullshite to now make her still be not only alive, but awake. It also reminds me of how hilarious it is that it took Layton all of about four seconds to bang Zarah and knock her up, when he was romantically attached to Josie for years.
I’m interested to see where they go with the weather thing. I agree that some sort of colony in space is feasible. Or there will be something else out there that Melanie will find at the research station. And I imagine Wilford will try to make a play on her out there as well.
The whole “let’s have Alex assassinate Layton” seemed dumb too. It’s your first time in “public” and you want to swing for the fences and likely not even make it out of there alive? Ans having Alex do it seems even more stupid. If Alex can’t see that she’s nothing more than a pawn to W then she is more stupid than I originally thought.
The Ruth thing annoys me, but it’s an interesting angle to all of this. Especially in that she has always idolized W and then found out he was still alive. And now he’s on the train, so he is kinda like Jesus in a way (which they alluded to in the episode).
Anybody else feel like the dimensions of the train are hilarious? I’m not sure how far up and back things are, but like Ruth gets the message and then marches uptrain to her “office,” which I assume is pretty far uptrain. But did she walk through 900+ cars? Because that’s how they made it seem. At least when Layton and whatsherface moved around they threw in a mention of the subtrain for them to use.

To be fair, Josie was giving Layton the ... cold shoulder.
