Sneakers (1992) - The follow up computer hacker movie from the writers of WarGames (1983)
Thought I would recommend. On HBO Max. Anybody seen this?

Stars Robert Redford, David Strathairn, Dan Aykroyd, River Phoenix, and Sidney Poitier.

For a movie from 1992, it does a better job of explaining hacking compared to the movie Hackers (1995), namely the social engineering aspects of breaking through computer security. Also touch upon phone phreaking. Simple stuff, but kinda cool that a movie from the early 90s does a good job of keeping the hacking grounded in reality.

Has a 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and made $102 million when it was first released.

The only criticism I have is that Redford and Poitier seem a bit out of place as they were in their late 50s and late 60s respectively. But otherwise a good movie.

Edit: Possible answer to the question "What was Dan Aykroyd's last good movie?"

This is a comfort food flick for me. So much star power. And River Phoenix has so much on screen charisma. He would have been a mega star had he not od'd.

Probably on home video or cable in the mid 90s when it was relatively fresh. I liked it. The story itself and parts of the script were a little clunky, but the acting was really good.

Meh - Sidney was 65 during production. Likewise, Redford was 56. It was people of their generation that started the NSA and all that kind of stuff, so it works to a degree. I had an uncle who was between them in age and he was a plankholder at NSA.

ETA: That would have been about the right age group for the very first hackers, too.

Sneakers is a great flick, and the cast is fantastic all around. But it's most definitely not even close to the last good movie he was in. Grosse Point Blank, Tommy Boy, and 50 First Dates were all after it.

This is one of my top three movies where I went in not knowing anything about it and left floored about how much I enjoyed it. It’s been a while since I’ve watched it. I need to give it another watch.

This movie is why I’m working in Cybersecurity now. My favorite of the genre, and incredibly accurate portrayal at the time.

It is, unsurprisingly, one of my all time favorite movies, which also includes another Redford classic, The Sting. I can watch it anytime anywhere.

“Too many secrets.”

It's a lot of fun. Ignore the science, just enjoy it for what it is :)

uh, yeah?

Sneakers is amazing and one of the most accessible spy movies for all ages. Loved this movie since I was a kid.

They were former Cold War spooks. Their age was fine for that.

"this is the brass ring kid"

I use this line all the time. Might not be 100% accurate but when Phoenix asks for her number when he can ask for anything is a really great line.

Forgot about that at the end. Great line for sure.

Caught Wargames for free on YT the other day. I had never see it.

While Sneakers is still a better movie (also a much better director in Phil Alden Robinson) Wargames was still a very fun time warp film.

Love it. River Phoenix's last film, I think.

Redford played a 60's ex-hippie pioneer hacker. He's exactly the right age.

I miss intelligent plots.

His character is a college student in 1969. Even if we assume PhD student, that puts his character at about 26 in the story. (Take Ben Kingsley’s character in 1969. Kingsley was born in 1942, so he’s the right age.) In real life, Redford was born in 1936, so he would have been 33 years old in 1969. I’m not saying a HUGE stretch, but it is a stretch.

Great, and Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft were teh same age when they filmed The Graduate.

Redford works well for the age requirement. He's supposed to be mid-40's and he looks it.
