Sitcoms that fluctuate between really funny episodes and dud episodes

There are sitcoms like Everybody Loves Raymond and the first few seasons of All in The Family that are consistently funny.
What are some sitcoms that were inconsistent - very funny episodes followed by duds?
Married With Children was inconsistent (but would usually dole up some T and A to boost up the bad episodes).
To me, Martin had a lot of bad episodes with a smattering of really funny episodes.

I'll probably get blasted for this, but as much as I love Cheers, there are quite a few dud episodes. Especially in the latter seasons, but that's pretty common in shows that ran as long as it did.
The first few seasons of Seinfeld are pretty inconsistent as well.

Every sitcom has duds. The problem is, some sitcoms aren't funny at all.

Blackish is a good recent example. Some episodes are gutbusting, others are incredibly flat, bordering on depressing.

Even Michael Jordan missed shots i finished a Cheers rewatch a couple of months ago, there's 271 episodes, of course there were a few "duds" even a couple of seasons that aren't as good. There was a writers strike in the late 80's that affected the start of the TV season (88 i think) and you can tell, pretty much any show from that era was "off"at the start of that season.

What they call season 1 was the pilot, which aired in the summer of 89 and the 4 episodes they ordered after the pilot that aired the next summer. Those are very so so. After that they ordered 12 episodes, S2. Those are mixed but some classics like the Pony Remark and the Chinese Restaurant. It also dipped a little when Larry David left.

correct. even the GOAT Seinfeld had duds.
For modern examples, I find Schitt's Creek very good, but there are some duds in there. I think this is more due to it walking the line between sweet drama and comedy, so the duds aren't bad episodes. They just are less funny

Yep.
Seinfeld is my favorite sitcom (potentially even TV show) of all time, but the first two seasons are meh.
Season 1 is flat out bad. You can tell Jerry was uncomfortable in the early going as an actor in terms of his delivery, expressions and timing. George isn't George yet. And you can tell Richards hadn't figured out yet how to play Kramer, since he gave off an awkward serial killer vibe in the early episodes instead of the gregarious, wacky neighbor (and sometimes moral compass) role he transitioned into.
Season 2 is better, and there are some memorable episodes in it that sandwiched between forgettable ones, but still lower than other seasons.
Season 3 is when the show really hit its stride and became what we know it to be today.

Jesus Christ, that show is going to be insufferable when it returns.

Had moments of sheer inspired brilliance.
The way they would revisit snippets of older episodes (e.g. when the Dunphy kids make the "Happy Birthday Grandpa" video and there are callbacks to about half a dozen previous episodes); the all FaceTime episode when Claire was stuck at the airport in Chicago (and totally busted the curve for pandemic behavior), and a few others.
The only thing I'm disappointed they didn't reprise was that I wish Jay's dog butler Barkley made another appearance... and was reunited with Rebarka.

That's also the first season they were picked up a regular show and did a full season. Season 2 was a half season and there a couple of classics but the peak imo was S3-5.

This, spot on assessment.

The first season of Seinfeld barely resembles Seinfeld (and we people talk about it being a GOAT show, they're really talking about Seasons 4,5,6,7)

If you remember "Get a Life" with Chris Elliot back in the 90's,there were unbelievably hilarious episodes followed by some strange, not funny head scratchers.
I think Chris Elliot was willing to go way
off the deep end with his writing and performances and it made the show a little uneven

It turned into a dramedy after the last of the major supporting cast members left(Larry Linville)
It took a completely different tone.

Didn't Alda take over as producer?
Alda's MASH did become a dramedy and wasn't what we fell in love with...a little too preachy.

quote:Wrong. The Stock Tip is one of the all-time great episodes. And even though Richards hadn't yet decided on manic Kramer, he did debut my favorite Kramer trait: he tends to smile/laugh when bad things happen to other people.
Season 1 is flat out bad.

I would make the opposite argument of you: the latter seasons got too over the top and slapsticky - like the writers were a little too content with themselves.

I
Producer, Director,Star...
I believe he had free reign to do whatever
he wanted. The show was killing it in the ratings and I'm sure money was pouring in to CBS
