Scorsese’s Irishman - Netflix VS Theater Chains - UPDATE: NOT RELEASING TO MAJOR CHAINS

But the film’s theatrical plan is not yet in place, because talks between Netflix and major theater chains have reportedly been “dragging on for months,” according to the New York Times—with both sides disagreeing on the specifics of that theatrical window. It’s still unclear where audiences will be able to see the upcoming gangster movie, beyond Netflix; The Irishman does not have a set release date, but will make its world debut at the New York Film Festival next month.

Per the Times, Netflix is seeking a robust theatrical release—perhaps even bigger than its 2019 Oscar winner, Roma—and is in talks with AMC Theatres and Cineplex, two of the heavy hitters in the field.
quote:Variety
The main clash has been over the film’s theatrical release window. AMC and Cineplex are apparently asking for a traditional three-month release period for the film; they do not want the film to be available to stream during that time, which clashes directly with Netflix’s raison d’etre. Per the Times, talks between the groups came to a halt in July, but were rekindled two weeks ago. Reps for Netflix, Scorsese, and Cineplex have all declined to comment. Reps for Regal and Cinemark, two other major chains, told the Times they were not in discussion with the streamer about the film.
UPDATE:

While Netflix executives Ted Sarandos, Scott Stuber and distribution head Spencer Klein certainly tried over the past few months to find common ground with major movie chains including AMC and Cineplex, The Irishman won’t be playing in multiplex screens controlled by those companies, or Regal and Cinemark, because the four week progression to SVOD remains unacceptable to those chains. The major exhibitors and NATO remain dug in on the three-month moratorium before films can begin their ancillary runs, an effort to protect their brick and mortar businesses. Joe Pesci should be the mediator

Oscar films make their money post January due to word of the mouth. No surprise here that the chains want a piece of it.

Of course. Why would the theater chains take up some of their screens with a movie that's also available to stream on a platform that people have already paid for? If its streaming and in theaters at same time, the hardcore movie/Scorsese fans will likely be the only ones going to the theater

Maybe but I would guess most of them wouldn't do that either. It's not like his movies are ones that will be that much cooler on the big screen. They aren't special effects extravaganzas. I've seen all his movies and if it's on Netflix same day as theaters I'm just going to watch on Netflix. Even it only comes up a month after theatrical release I'd probably wait for Netflix. Honestly, I'd probably only see it in theaters if it was more like a 6 month to a year wait.

Netflix will give The Irishman a 27-day theatrical window before the film makes its streaming service bow on November 27. Netflix will launch on November 1 in Los Angeles and New York the epic crime drama that reunites director Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro for the first time in 24 years, in the Steven Zaillian-scripted adaptation of the Charles Brandt novel about the disappearance of former Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa. The film will add screens in the U.S. and expand to UK theaters on November 8. While the screen counts aren’t set yet, the film will be in theaters in most major U.S. cities by the time it begins streaming on Netflix the day before Thanksgiving.

I have my doubts this movie will be academy award worthy anyway. I think most everyone involved is well past their prime and I don’t think people are gonna like the CGI novelty
I think it’ll be a good movie, just don’t think you’ll be hearing Oscar buzz from it

Every Scorsese feature film since 2000 with the exception of Shutter Island has been nominated for an Oscar. As packed as this movie is, I doubt that it will be snubbed.
Whether it's worthy or not is subjective.
Would be hilarious if it was nominated for special effects over one of the sci-fi/superhero films.
