Rush (1991) - movie about drugs, CI, and undercover cops in 1970’s

I love this movie and have had it on my watchlist for a while on Amazon and iTunes. I can’t find a digital version to add to my library.

I was a boy in the 70’s and this movie hits very close to home. I knew men like Gaines, the CI, and some of the other characters. It was dark days in the drug trade if you got on the wrong side of a dealer. I guess that holds true today but there was literally zero awareness back in the day.

Anyway, has anyone else seen this movie? It didn’t do well at the box office because I don’t think a lot of people could relate unless you were growing up in that time.

I think this is actually a good movie. Watched it randomly on HBO one night a few years ago and was sucked in.

The main character deserved to die for framing and setting up Gregg Allman's character. Even if he was guilty they didn't have the evidence.

We hunted this down a couple of months ago. I think it’s on Tubi. My wife hand fond memories of it. It’s okay for what it was.

I think it has one of the better opening scenes - it jolts you and sucks you in.

Love it. I think its Jason Patric's best performance. The while vibe of the movie was really well done. It took you to that time and place.

Soundtrack was great as well.

Are you thinking “Narc”? I always got the two mixed up. But the opening scene for that one really freaked me out for a long time after hearing that poor bystander scream.

Shite, I was.

Both these movies get me confused.

We grew up during the same times, and had similar experiences. Here's what I said about it in an old thread about it.

quote:

Love the movie, have the DVD, and love the characters in it.

On the likable side, we have the two undercover cops, and their snitch.

On the "Would hate to be around that guy" side we have the acting chief of police, and some really scary dealers. Mainly the tatted up overalls with no shirt William Sadler character named Monroe , and the " Pretty soon you be feeling all unnecessary" guy named Willie Red.

Not even sure how bad the Greg Allman character named Will Gaines was. I might want to kill cops that set me up illegally, too.

I've said on here before that it's very realistic for the subject matter, at the time. It shows the dirty underbelly of the "Fun times" portrayed in Dazed & Confused. It's the life some of those kids would have ended up in. Both movies remind me of growing up in the 70's. I got exposed to a lot of that "Dazed and confused" life, and a little bit of the "Rush" life.

Wish we had a full movie about the Monroe, and Willie Red. They were way more interesting than Will Gaines.

I edited out a bunch of picture links from that old post.

Ritchie,
The narcs didn't want to set the drug dealer up. The acting chief of police made them do it.

That's just one more layer that added to the movie being realistic. Back then cops could get away with being more corrupt. In Southern states those kids of practices were common, and they started at the top.

I really like this movie. Big fan of Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The soundtrack is probably my favorite movie soundtrack. It was done by Eric Clapton, and is great !

Grateful that I grew up 100% in the D&C world. Had a couple of friends that had to leave the state because they were in that Rush existence.

Been a few years since I watched it, but it was solid and depressing.

I think it was a little ahead of its time. Drug dealers and gangsters were still wearing expensive suits hanging out on yachts and shite in 80's TV/movies. Rush definitely showed another side that I think would have generated more interest in the era that came after the Sopranos, the Wire, or BB.

Actually read the book before the movie came out. Based on a true story. Like the movie but as is the case most of the time, the book was better.

Never saw the movie. I just remember my bro in law was deployed to the Middle East at the time this came out, and for some reason he sent my sister a bootleg copy of this soundtrack that he picked up in some Arab market. We tried listening to it, and the quality was awful.

You probably wouldn't recognize him in this; he actually played a kind of grizzled cowboy looking guy in this one.
