Robert Downey Jr. Plans MCU-Like Universe for ‘Sherlock Holmes’

Robert Downey Jr. is planning to apply the Marvel Cinematic Universe strategy to his upcoming third “Sherlock Holmes” movie, which is being directed by “Rocketman” helmer Dexter Fletcher. The actor’s “Sherlock Holmes” franchise has been dormant since the second film, “Game of Shadows,” opened in 2011. Downey Jr.’s two “Sherlock Holmes” movies earned Warner Bros. over $1 billion combined at the worldwide box office, and now the actor is hoping to give the studio its own MCU courtesy of a “Holmes”-inspired movie universe.
During an October 5 panel at Fast Company’s Innovation Festival, Downey Jr. and his producing partner and wife Susan Downey confirmed “conversations are happening” to build out the third “Sherlock Holmes” movie into a new film universe.
quote:
"Doing a one-off third movie, we could do, but we do think there’s opportunity to build it out more, to spin off some characters from the third movie, to see what’s going on in the television landscape, to see how Warner Media is starting to build things out with HBO and HBOMax,” Susan Downey said. “We definitely have kind of grand schemes and plans and all that, but it takes a lot. It takes a lot of coordination because again, Marvel wasn’t built in a day. It took several wins and things that worked very well to then be able to connect them, to then be able to branch out.”
Robert Downey Jr. added, “At this point, we really feel there’s not a mystery-verse built out anywhere, and Conan Doyle is the definitive voice in that arena to this day, so to me, why do a third movie if you’re not going to be able to spin off into some real gems of diversity, and other times and elements? We’re not repeaters, we don’t want to just try to do what’s been done somewhere else. But I think the model itself has become much more dimensionalized than it was before.”

Get ready for a Watson prequel series.

How does this even work? Everyone gets prequals, and we get to see how Moriarty gets to be evil?

Game of Shadows was a great movie. Why mess with a winning formula?

I'm guessing that he goes Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen route.

These are fun movies for me. Sign me up. I love Sherlock Holmes and I enjoyed Downey and Law in them. They pull good actors for the villains and supporting characters too.

I've kinda had enough of him for a while

Without Guy Ritchie directing I don’t know if I’m interested.

Yes please.
I really hate the Sherlock Holmes movies with Downey Jr., they are obnoxious.
Obnoxiously loud, obnoxious action and way too cute in the dialogue...fast-paced and yes, obnoxious.
Take a breath, make a Sherlock Holmes movie...like the old ones or the TV show...Sherlock doesn't have to be The Fast and the Furious.

Yep. I always thought he was a joke because of that Madonna movie he did but those Sherlock movies were incredible, I'll take those fight scenes over half of the "action" movies most here think are so incredible.

Not generally a fan of gimmick filmmaking and over-the-top CGI, but Richie really used those tools to make a better movie with Game Of Shadows. The escape from the munitions plant scene was stunningly well done.

Please no more universes. We don’t need it. There aren’t enough valuable characters in Sherlock Holmes, and there’s too many competing narratives. We’ve got Sherlock Holmes series, multiple different Sherlock Holmes movies including a comedy, now the Enola Holmes movie with another different Sherlock. There’s too much going on with Sherlock Holmes. Try a new concept Hollywood

I wasn't aware that his Holmes was anything special. Can't be worse than his Dr. Doolittle , I'm guessing.

I like Cumberbatch as Sherlock and that's a very good series, but I'd be interested in a RDJ Sherlock as well. I've enjoyed his depictions before.

I really like the RDJ Holmes movies

Are there enough recurring characters in the Sherlock Holmes novels to build a film/tv EU? Maybe he’s hinting at kind of a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen esque situation with different characters from classic literature and Sherlock as the central person.
