He (David Ogden Stiers) was the only reason I kept watching M.A.S.H. after it became preachy. One of the best characters ever.

He was the voice of Cogsworth ( the mantle clock) in Beauty and the Beast. The animated original, not the live action bastardization.

He was also Jumbaa in Lilo and Stitch, which is one of the best movies Disney has ever made.

It was a great move by Mash when the didn't go with a straight up Frank Burns type after Larry Linville Left. Stiers played a better foil overall and his character could hold his own with Hawkeye and BJ. Same with the move to get Harry Morgan to play Potter after McClean Stevenson left the Henry Blake role. Significantly different type character but it worked.

RIP David Ogden Stiers.

Great decision by Gelbart, Alda, and/or who made those decisions.

I watched Better Off Dead a hundred times as a kid and I still forgot that he was the dad.

I thought Morgan and Farrell were terrible replacements.

I agree. Winchester was the one good decision of the later years.

Writer Ken Levine says here it was his and his collaborator's decision

I know folks love to hate on late MASH but I preferred Winchester to the punching bag that was Frank Burns.

Damn, CE Winchester was one of the best characters in TV history. Sorry to see yet another remnant of my youth pass on.
