Which makes it very impressive that the Anna Faris/Eugenio Derbez remake has done so well.

$71.8m worldwide take ($45.5m dom) at the BO on a $12m budget.

Looks like the producers knew what they were doing by casting Mexico's Eugenio Derbez in the male role ($23m of int'l take from Mexico). In it's 5th weekend out it added another $1.9m and has become the highest grossing release for Lionsgate's Pantelion label domestically topping the previous high of $44.46m domestic for Instructions Not Included which also starred Derbez.

I've watched her show "Mom" a couple of times and it's so weird seeing someone as good as Allison Janney doing such a corny cookie cutter sitcom.

I'll take $4.7M and call myself a failure.

You're forgetting theater splits and advertising. The original movie lost money. That's why it ran a skillion times on Comedy Central back in the day. It was cheap programming.

It’s a steady paycheck. Those indy movies that Allison Jannery likes to do don’t pay that much.

Overboard is #8 in sales rank for Romance movies on Amazon.

In the past 20 years I've rarely been in someone's house who didn't have that DVD.

So don't act like it was a failure.

Sometimes movies make all their money on DVD sales.

Plus Overboard opened in a terrible time, December.

And it opened just before Christmas when people are busy doing other things - like Christmas.

And it opened against Wall Street, Moonstruck, Good Morning Vietnam, Broadcast News, Eddie Murphy's Raw and Empire of the Sun.

Overboard didn't stand much of a chance at the BO.

This is an odd statement on several levels.

I'm sorry but there is no way around the fact that it was a box office failure. The fact that it might have done well on home video (which you have no links to) does not change that it lost money at the BO.

Also, who cares about the competition it went up against when it opened? Never mind that Christmas is a time that movies make bank b/c so many people have time off.

There are plenty of movies I like that lost money at the BO. I love Captain Ron. It's still failed at the BO.

Anyways, the point of this thread is that the remake has done quite well for itself (better than the original in fact) despite this board's disgust at it's existence.

I used to think Anna Faris was pretty funny, but she's been grating on me lately. And Overboard was not a movie that needed a remake.

The original was a Box Office failure but adjusting for inflation the 1987 release made ~$56 million domestically vs 2018's $44 million.

It also had a 22m budget which ups to $48m in today's $$$.

Overboard...being released at the same time as 5 Oscar contenders still made more money at the BO than:

Raising Arizona
Baby Boom
Empire of the Sun
Hamburger Hill
Less Than Zero
Innerspace
Jaws IV

Overboard was barely behind The Princess Bride.

And became one of the most popular VHS rentals and future DVD sales on Amazon.

The new Overboard is going to have to be all International and big cities with huge Mexican populations because nobody else knows that dude.

Dude is the biggest comedian in the Spanish speaking world. Smart move on the producers part for a shitty remake of a shitty movie.
