This came out on HBO within the last week and I don’t think I’ve seen any mention of it here. They dropped the pilot and an additional 2 episodes. It’s a comedy about an aristocrat that decides to give it all up and become a pirate.

It’s no masterpiece, by any means, but it’s been funny enough to keep me watching. I’m meh on most of the cast so far, but the main characters actor is great and carries it well enough. I just read Taika is playing Blackbeard, so that alone will keep me watching.

“People who tune into the HBO Max pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death aren’t going to be surprised by the tone or nature of the humor. Co-stars Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby worked together on the TV series Flight of the Conchords and Waititi’s movies Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows. (Darby, famously, was the profanity-hating leader of the “werewolves, not swearwolves” pack.) The new series shares some of the same subdued absurdist comedy they use in those projects, built around the same kinds of endlessly awkward, puffed-up strivers who have no idea how ridiculous they look to everyone around them. This time, Darby stars as awkward, incompetent pirate captain Stede Bonnet, and Waititi backs him up as his partner and mentor, Edward Teach — aka the notorious pirate Blackbeard.”

anyone else watching?

It’s about to really ramp up with Waititi showing up at the end of episode 3.

Rhys Darby is one of the most underrated comedic gems of the last 15 years.

Almost gave up after the first 15 minutes, but stuck it out since I love WWDITS. Got a little better near the end of ep. 1, or at least enough for me to watch the next couple. Episodes 2 and 3 were much better once it found its groove.

i was legitimately bored after 15 minutes. a bumbling pirate captain isn't exactly new territory tbh. i'm sticking it out, but saying "i almost gave up after 15 minutes." isn't far fetched.

shite, I keep forgetting about this.

I love Flight of the Conchords and What We do in the Shadows.

Is Jemaine Clement in this at all?

Nah Waikiti is tho

I’m sure Clement would probably guest star at some point if the show gets some traction but I think he’s trying to branch out and do his own thing a bit which is why he left WWDITS

I think Nat Faxon has been criminally underused so far.

I tried it. So much better on the tube right now. With a job and family - I can only put so much time in.

Ok, I watched all 3 available episodes last night. It’s OK. I agree that it’s hitting its stride, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

It’s ridiculous, but there aren’t many laugh out loud moments.

Good to know. I "watched" 1-3 last night, it completely lost my attention and was just background noise.

Literally the only things I caught were some guys wanted to mutiny, Hodor likes burning things, smokey Blackbeard, a girl disguised as a guy, and Fred Armisen brought tapas.

It really picks up here for those who haven't made it yet.

I never knew I wanted TW as Blackbeard, but damn if this guy doesn't deliver in whatever he's in.
